"Hal-Lou-Ween" is the fifth episode of the sixth season of Fresh Off the Boat. It first aired on October 25, 2019.
Synopsis[]
It's Halloween again, and with Eddie getting closer to college, the Huang boys are determined to find a group costume they can all agree on. Meanwhile, Louis decides this is the year he'll finally show Jessica why his favorite spooky holiday is so great.
Plot[]
Louis is in the attic obtaining the Halloween decorations, with a rope tied around him held by Evan. Since Jessica hates Halloween, Louis tells Evan that his plan to get her on board with the holiday is to host a haunted house at their home, since Jessica loves to instill fear in others. However, upon their return to the kitchen, Jessica dismisses the idea and tells Louis he cannot convert their home into a haunted house for the neighborhood. Jessica tries to claim that she will still support Louis' holiday by buying candy for the trick-or-treaters, although all she buys are raisins, much to Louis' dismay.
Changing his clothes, Evan sits on the couch with Emery as the two peruse photos of the family's previous Halloween costumes. Evan believes that they have exhausted all the couple's costumes, with Emery wondering if this is the year they can finally go as Frasier Crane and Niles Crane. Evan replies that he doesn't want to argue with Emery over who would be Niles, and the two began to speak in affected tones before laughing snobbishly.
Just then, Eddie walks in through the front door and Emery asks him if he has any plans for Halloween. Eddie responds that he is too old to celebrate Halloween but bids his brothers luck on their plans, advising them not to do drugs. As he heads to his room, Evan is flabbergasted that Eddie would consider himself too old to celebrate Halloween. Emery then gets the idea that perhaps the three brothers should go in costume together for Halloween, referring to a photo where the three dressed up as the "Three Amigos." While discussing potential trios, Emery tells Evan that they can work out the specifics later but that the first step would be to convince Eddie to join them.
Jessica heads into her bedroom, only to find Trent Masterson there. Jessica asks Louis what Trent is doing in their room, and Louis tells her that Trent is there to help him pick out Halloween decorations for the haunted house. Jessica states that she thought she had made it clear to him that they would not be making their home into a haunted house, but Louis replies that he will instead be transforming Louis Huang's Cattleman's Ranch Steakhouse into a haunted house instead. Louis then asks Jessica if she would take his place as one of the judges at Abraham Lincoln Middle School's Halloween costume contest, and she begrudgingly agrees, citing that it is the least she could do for preventing Louis from having the haunted house at their home.
Emery and Evan head to Eddie's room to convince him to join them, stating that neighborhoods give out much bigger candy now. Eddie considers it but declines, stating that he would just stay home and eat whatever leftover candy Louis bought that he didn't hand out. However, Emery and Evan mention that Jessica bought the 'candy' this year and that she bought raisins, Eddie decides to join them trick-or-treating, deciding to use Jenny's sleeping bag as his candy bag.
At the middle school, Jessica is judging alongside Principal Hunter and school counselor Richard Tim. Jessica gives out negative scores and negative criticism, making the children cry, much to Hunter's disappointment. The next contestant, Henrietta, then takes the stage, dressed as a detective. Hunter mentions that he would like to ask if there is something under Henrietta's trenchcoat, but is not allowed to to ask that. Jessica, much to the surprise of the audience and her fellow judges, gives Henrietta a perfect score. Hunter asks Jessica if she knows who Henrietta is dressing up as, and Jessica states that she is dressed as Jennifer Hong, from her book "A Case of a Knife to the Brain." Jessica expresses her surprise that Henrietta knows her book, and Henrietta responds that there are other "Brain-heads" out there.
Jessica returns home and eagerly tells Louis that she is on board with Halloween. Ignoring Eddie as he attempts to blow dry the smell out of Jenny's sleeping bag, Louis wonders why she would suddenly be into Halloween before dismissing it, thinking she is tricking him. Jessica replies that she is not tricking him, explaining that a girl at the school was dressed up as Jennifer Hong. Louis finds it hard to believe that a child would be dressed as someone from Jessica's book, which was geared towards an adult demographic and didn't sell many copies. Jessica informs him that she was invited to a Halloween party hosted by student "Brain-heads", which shocks Louis, who cannot believe that multiple children are dressing up as Jessica's characters. Jessica asks Louis to come with her to the party, but Louis tells her that while he would love to, he has to set up at the haunted house at Cattleman's. Louis eventually makes a deal with her, one where he tags along with her in exchange for her coming to the haunted house afterwards, and Jessica agrees.
Eddie heads to his bedroom only to find Emery and Evan inside, dressed as Snoopy and a doctor respectively. Wearing a gold chain and holding a boombox, Emery declares that he is "Snoopy Dogg" while Evan stated that he is "renowned physician Dr. Dre", and Emery tells Eddie that he can be "Iced Tea." Eddie corrects him, telling him that it is "Ice-T", and wants to know what his brothers are up to, mentioning that he was not kidding when he told them to abstain from drugs. Emery states that he wants to do a brothers costume, which Evan refers to as a threesome, and Eddie, telling Evan not to use that word again, tells his brothers that he would be down to doing a collaborative costume with them. Evan wonders who they could go as since the stores are closed and it's already Halloween, and Eddie states that he would think of something on the fly. When Emery mimics him, Eddie praises him and suggests that they dress up as each other for Halloween.
Louis and Jessica head to the address that Jessica was given, only to find themselves in an empty lot. Louis states that the address was fake and opts to return to Cattleman's, but Jessica replies that this situation is similar to one in her book, where Jennifer Hong was given a false address, only to find the factory she was looking for down the street. Jessica suggests that they check each house for Henrietta, but Louis reminds her that even on Halloween, two adults going door-to-door asking if there's a little girl at home would be construed as creepy. Jessica then decides that they could ease the situation by dressing up, pointing out that Louis has Halloween costumes in the trunk. Jessica dresses up as Chucky from Child's Play while Louis wears a cow costume, calling himself "Mad Cow Disease", and the pair go trick-or-treating as a way to check each house to see where Henrietta's party is.
Eddie dresses up as Evan, only for Emery to enter the room dressed as Evan as well. Emery berates Eddie, telling Eddie that he was supposed to be Emery. Just then, Evan walks in, confused as he notices his brothers dressed like him. Eddie asks Evan who Evan is supposed to be, and Evan explains that he was dressing up as Eddie but changed back to his original clothes, thinking that Emery was not dressing up as one of them and therefore would feel left out. Eddie and Emery assure him that they are fine with it, and Eddie tells Evan to change into "Eddie" while he changes into "Emery"; however, Evan states that he thinks three "Evan's" would be cute and suggests that he go as himself for Halloween while Eddie and Emery both go as him as well, and they agree.
Jessica and Louis successfully go trick-or-treating at various houses until Jessica finally comes across Henrietta's house, where Henrietta's sister notifies them that Henrietta is hosting a book club at the graveyard. Louis attempts to head to the graveyard but is stopped by Jessica, who tells him that in her book, the graveyard did not mean a literal graveyard but instead referred to the school, and thus believes that's where her fans would be. Louis becomes upset and tells her that while she could go to the school, he would be heading to Cattleman's to set up the decorations for the haunted house.
Eddie, Emery and Evan head next door, where Marvin and Honey are on the porch giving out candy to trick-or-treaters, Marvin dressed as an angel while Honey is dressed as Buffy Summers. Marvin asks who the boys are supposed to be dressed as, and when Evan answers him with Eddie and Emery imitating Evan, Honey correctly deduces that all three of them are Evan. Eddie and Emery then make fun of Evan, Eddie mentioning that Evan's waistline goes to his nipple line and that "Mommy" would love three Evan's, which upsets Evan. However, when Eddie adds that Evan discovered sports through Brandi Chastain and Emery clarifies that by "sports" he means anatomy, referring to Evan gaining his first erection when he saw Brandi Chastain, Evan becomes humiliated and insulted. Admonishing his brothers for ruining Halloween, he storms off. Emery mocks his walk until Eddie stops him, telling him that the joke is over.
Intending to go to the school, Jessica realizes that the decorations for the haunted house are still in the vehicle and decides to head to Cattleman's to drop it off. Entering the restaurant, she finds it empty with the sole exception of Trent, who is lying face down on the floor. Yelping, Jessica rushes to his side hoping he is not dead, claiming that they would have to disclose the death when they sold the place. Trent, who was asleep, wakes up and is surprised to find Jessica there. Trent attempts to explain that the reason he was sleeping on the ground is because he has a bad back, although Jessica does not care. Jessica asks him where Louis is, and Trent tells her that he cannot tell her as he promised Louis he would keep it a secret. Jessica then exploits Trent's bad back by dropping sugar packets on the floor, knowing that Trent is duty-bound as assistant manager to pick them up. Trent then caves and reveals Louis' secret to Jessica.
Eddie and Emery return home, where Jenny is dressed as Eric Cartman from South Park. Jenny tells them that Evan is his room and admonishes them for mocking them, referring to Eddie as "goofy" and telling Emery that he has fragile hands. As Eddie tells Emery that they need to make up with Evan, Jenny begins to quote Cartman, whom she stated she liked because he was always noticed when Kenny was killed.
Jessica heads to the school and expresses her elation at seeing the children dressed up as her characters, and tells them that in the original draft, they were all prostitutes. When Henrietta asks how Jessica knows that, Jessica reveals to them that she is the author of the book, much to their joy. Henrietta then tells her that she wishes there were more "Brain-heads" and Jessica replies that sales for Stephen King's books spiked after he got into an accident. Jessica then tells Henrietta to take a knife out of her purse and to stab her in her thigh so that her book's sales would increase, thereby creating more fans. The children becomes disturbed and uncomfortable at the situation until Louis walks in, telling them that Jessica is kidding.
Dismissing the students, Jessica confronts him and Louis asks how she knew that he had set the whole thing up. Jessica informs him that Trent told her the truth, and he admits that once Jessica said no to the haunted house, he decided to lure her into enjoying Halloween by tricking her; he had lied about setting up a haunted house at Cattleman's and had planted Henrietta to dress up as Jennifer Hong at the school contest. He then arranged for the students to meet up at the graveyard and successfully tricked Jessica into trick-or-treating, and adds that once Jessica decided that the school was the 'graveyard', he had to leave under the guise of heading to Cattleman's so that he could go the graveyard and have the children relocate to the school. Jessica admits that she did enjoy celebrating this Halloween, and Louis adds that he just wanted to spend his favorite holiday with his favorite person. Jessica then rates her day as a 76 out of 100, which Louis accepts as a passing score.
Eddie and Emery, dressed as each other, go into Evan's room and apologize. Evan smiles at their impersonations of each other and tells them that he overreacted, and apologizes to his older brothers for ruining Halloween. Eddie then tells Evan that he did not ruin Halloween, and that a perk of being older is that they can celebrate Halloween and go out trick-or-treating much later than they previously could. Emery then wonders who they would even dress as, and Evan brings up the photo of the three of them dressed up as "The Three Amigos."
At the front of the house, Louis and Jessica are handing out raisins to the trick-or-treaters; Louis thanks Jessica for handing out the 'candy' with him, and Jessica replies that it was the least she could do after what Louis did for her. The Powerpuff Girls they gave raisins to then reappear, pelting them with the raisins, with one of the girls claiming that they ruined her childhood and referring the two as "bitches."
Inside, Eddie, Emery and Evan don their outfits as the Three Amigos, but Eddie and Emery have outgrown the outfits, with it being a little tight on Emery while Eddie's midriff is exposed. Evan walks in, claiming that his outfit still fits. The brothers then strike a pose only for a ripping noise to be heard. Eddie then tells his brothers that he ripped something but isn't sure what it was, and asks his brothers to look away.

- Emery and Evan reminisce over photos of the family's previous Halloweens, including photos of them in costume. However, all of the photos are either screenshots or official promotional images of the episodes themselves, and should not exist in-universe as no one was around in those scenes to take the photos.
Quotes[]
Louis: You got tension on me, Evan? I gotta go deeper. Evan: Deeper?! Huang, you're a madman! Louis: I don't have a choice. Your mom insists on putting all the Halloween decorations in the back. Evan: Because she hates the holiday. Louis: Yeah, that ends this year. Aah! Evan: Aah! I dropped the rope, you're on your own! Louis: No, no, no, it's okay. It's just your mom's novel – "A Case of a Knife to the Brain." Scary. Evan: Oh. You mean the part where the butler lost all his skin? Louis: No, I mean how many unsold copies we still have. |
Louis: Well, I thought you'd love a haunted house. Your heart is fueled by fear. C'mon, pop out, scare the pants off the neighborhood kids. Jessica: No to strange kids walking through our house all night with their dirty feet. It's bad enough your mother doesn't brush her tires. Louis: I don't get it, Jessica. Your book was a horror novel. It scared tens of... Hundreds of people. Jessica: Well, Louis, it's just not for me. But, to prove that I am not a total Scrooge – A real villain on a real holiday – I bought you the treats to hand out to the costumed beggars! Louis: I knew it! Somewhere beneath that hard candy shell lies a soft, gooey... Raisins?! Raisins aren't candy! Jessica: It says right on the box – "Nature's candy." Louis: But, Jessica, the neighborhood knows I'm a double-barrel candy man – Twix, Reese's, Kit Kat. That's a double double-barrel! A quad-barrel! Why is it when it comes to Halloween, you never listen to me? Jessica: That's not true. I listen to you. Louis: So are we on the same page? Jessica: Yes. No spooky house. Louis: Oh, come on! Jessica: Hey, our house will be haunted soon enough when your mother... Well, soon enough. |
Evan: These are like scrapbook crack. Emery: We've had some good times. Evan: Yeah, but looking back, it seems like we've exhausted all the couples costumes. Emery: Maybe this is the year we can finally do Frasier and Niles. Evan: I don't want to get in a big fight over who gets to be Niles. Emery: The last time Maris and I got in a fight, we were roundly shushed by a particularly plucky sommelier. Evan: Talk about whining! Emery: Hey, Eddie. Big Halloween plans? Eddie: Eh, I'm too old to 'ween it up. I'm just gonna skip it. But you boys have fun. No drugs, okay? Evan: "Too old to 'ween it up"? You hear that bull? Emery: Yeah. He's growing up too fast. He's gonna miss this when he's gone off to college. He did make a great Dusty Bottoms. And soon, the Three Amigos will be two. The Dos Amigos. Evan: Que lastima. Emery: That's it! That's the answer to our costume problem. We bring back the trio. Evan: Three opens up a world of possibilities. The three Chipmunks. Emery: The three Rice Krispie guys. Evan: The three states of matter. Solid, liquid... Emery and Evan: Eddie would be gas. Emery: We'll keep thinking. Until then, we've got to get Eddie on board. Well, dear brother, it seems we've bested another conundrum. Evan: Was that Frasier or Niles? Emery: Frasier. But from Cheers. Before he sold out. |
Eddie: You guys gotta knock. I got a lady now. Emery: We had to knock more when you didn't have a lady. Evan: Eddie, do you have any extra pillowcases just lying around? Eddie: Nah, I stopped using them. Too much work. Evan: Uch, you're a beast. |
Jessica: Can I give out a negative number? A wolf should not have a human girlfriend. It brings up too many icky questions. |
Louis: In for Halloween? What does that mean? Oh, wait, you're tricking me. Jessica: No tricks. All treats. A little girl dressed up in the competition as Jennifer Hong! Louis: From your book? Come on. What are the chances? Jessica: Are you implying that nobody read it? Louis: ...No. What I mean is, I find it hard to believe a little girl would dress up as a character from such a... gritty novel. Lotta sex in there. Jessica: They made me cut half of it out. They say they want real, and then when you give it to them, they don't want it. |
Eddie: What the hell is going on here, guys? I wasn't kidding about the drugs. Evan: I'm surprised you have to ask. I'm renowned physician Dr. Dre. Emery: And I'm Snoopy Dog. You can be Iced Tea. Eddie: Did you say "Iced Tea"? It's Ice-T! Emery: We want to do a brothers costume. Evan: Yeah, we wanna have a threesome. Eddie: O... kay. So, never say that. But I would be down to do a costume with you two. |
Louis: Jessica, two adults can't go door-to-door asking if a little girl is home. It's creepy, even for Halloween. |
Louis: Hi, I'm Mad Cow Disease. Jessica: And I am an evil Irish toddler. Louis: Chucky from Child's Play. Jessica: Speaking of children playing, does a cute 12-year-old girl with an active imagination and a great taste in books live here? Louis: Uh... what she means is... Trick-or-treat! Real smooth, Jessica. |
Eddie: Wait, you're dressed as Evan? I thought I was going as the little man. Emery: No, Eddie, you're supposed to be Emery and I'm supposed to be Evan! Eddie: Why'd they give us all "E" names? Very confusing! [to Evan] Who the hell are you? Evan: I'm Evan. Why are you both dressed as me? Eddie: Because Emery messed up. What's your excuse? Evan: I was dressing up as Eddie, but then I got worried Emery would feel left out, and I didn't want to hurt anyone's feelings, so I put my own clothes back on. Eddie: Dude, nobody cares who you dress as. Emery: Yeah, we wouldn't be upset. Eddie: Yeah, bro, it's all out of love. Just go change, and we will too. Evan: Hang on, hang on, hang on. Let's not be too hasty here, fellas. Not to strum my own viola here, but we all do look pretty cute dressed as me. Emery: Hmm. I did put a lot of thought and time into my bangs. Eddie: Not to mention it took me 30 minutes to stuff myself into these shorts. I had to wear my thinnest underwear. Evan: Look at us. Three Evans, one Halloween? Eddie: We have to promise not to run tonight, because these shorts are up there. |
Honey: Oh, my God! Three Evans! Eddie: Three Evans, that'd be Mommy's dream. Marvin: Yeah, I can see it now. And I like it. Eddie: I'm Evan, and my waistline doubles as my nipple line. Emery: I organize my undies by the color of the rainbow! Evan: Oh, what light spectrum do you use to organize your unmentionables? Eddie: I discovered sports because of Brandi Chastain. Evan: Hey! Emery: And by "sports," I mean my anatomy! Evan: I was just trying to have some fun, until you mother-brothers decided to ruin it! |
Jessica: Tell me... what Louis... did. Trent: I'm sorry, I can't. Well, here we are. This was bound to happen. His real wife and his work wife, caught in a conflict. |
Jessica: Well, you finally got me to like Halloween. Louis: I just wanted to spend my favorite holiday with my favorite person. Jessica: I give it a 76 out of 100. Louis: A passing score. I'll take it. |
Emery: Yo, what we did was mad messed up. Eddie: Sorry, let me get my bangs out of my face so I can tell you I'm sorry too. We took it a little too far. Emery: Yo, yo, yo, did I tell you I have a girlfriend and I like rap music? Evan: That was a pretty good Eddie. Eddie: We're sorry. We didn't mean to hurt your feelings. Evan: It's okay. I overreacted. I didn't mean to ruin our Halloween. Eddie: Ruined? It's not ruined. See, the cool thing about being older is you can trick-or-treat way later. |
Louis: All right! Some feminine insects! Powerpuff Girl: We're Powerpuff Girls. Louis: Oh. Well, great costumes, whatever they are. [to Jessica] Thanks for handing out candy with me. Jessica: It's the least I could do after all you did for me tonight. Louis: Fun, right? Jessica: It's not as dumb as it looks. Powerpuff Girl: Raisins?! You ruined my childhood, bitches! |
