"Jessica Town" is the tenth episode of the sixth season of Fresh Off the Boat. It first aired on December 13, 2019.
Synopsis[]
Louis tries to help Jessica with holiday planning. Eddie, Emery, and Evan find themselves on the naughty list for breaking an expensive gift.
Plot[]
Jessica wakes up early and begins to set up her "Jessica Town" model, imagining herself as the Mayor, her sons as well-dressed gentlemen, Louis as the butcher, Honey and Marvin as repair shop owners, and Deidre and Carol-Joan as waste gatherers. While she is setting up her town, she sings "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year" out loud, waking up her family and causing them to head downstairs. As she tells them it was about time they got out of bed, Evan points out that it is 5:00 am while Emery reminds her that Thanksgiving was just last night, and Eddie, claiming to be more turkey than man, asks her if she could put her preparations on hold until daytime; Jessica declines, notifying her family that with Thanksgiving being over, the Christmas season has officially begun and that there was no time to waste.
At the breakfast table, Eddie tells his brothers that he ate his pancakes with leftover turkey gravy, causing them to leave the table in disgust. As Jessica approaches the table, Louis tells her that the community park is building an ice rink for the holidays and that he would like to go with her, since the last time they skated together was before they had children. However, Jessica declines, intending to spend the time on holiday decorations. She states her preparations have to be perfect since it is 1999 and therefore the last Christmas of both the century and the millennium. Presenting Louis with a gingerbread house, she tells him that she will making a life-sized version to place on their lawn.
Louis tells Jessica that she should be subtracting from her holiday list rather than adding, sadly mentioning that he loses her for the entire month of December. Jessica replies that people expect perfection from her when it comes to Christmas, including her Christmas cards and getting her sons the unique present they each want; Louis then asks the boys what they would like for Christmas, and all three unanimously respond that they want a gift card. Telling Jessica that Christmas gets simpler as the boys get older, he once again suggests that they go ice skating; Jessica refuses once more, citing that she could not risk getting hurt on the ice as there would be no one else to do the holiday work, and heads out to purchase tinsel.
Eddie and Evan join Jenny and Emery on the couch helping the latter practice his lines. When Emery asks them to read it again, Evan whines in frustration, and Jenny tells them that they shouldn't whine since Emery needs their help, stressing the importance of family. As Emery and Jenny relocate elsewhere to rehearse on their own, Evan commends Eddie for intentionally ruining his line delivery to get them out of helping Emery.
Just then, Honey enters their house and asks if they would mind hiding a maritime nutcracker for her; she had bought it as a present for Marvin but since Marvin is snooping for presents around the house, she wishes to hide it so that she could surprise him on Christmas morning. Telling them that she would be back later to wrap it, she thanks them and leaves. Eddie remarks his disbelief that the nutcracker can physically crack a nut, despite Evan's insistence that the lever within could generate the necessary force and that it was physics.
In order to prove Eddie wrong, Evan uses one of the table nuts and successfully cracks it, much to Eddie's joy. The brothers then decide to test the nutcracker on other items, only to break it when they try using a jawbreaker. Eddie tells Evan that they would merely have to replace it before Honey finds out and asks him how much it would cost, and Evan, checking the price tag, informs him that the nutcracker cost $400.
Returning home with her Lao Ban Santa costume, Jessica notices the Christmas cards sealed in envelopes on the table. She asks Emery about it and he informs her that Louis had completed it in her stead, who seemed happy to use his hippo tuba stamps. Jessica is unsatisfied with Louis' messy handwriting and choice of postage stamp, remarking that tuba hippos do not represent Christmas. She then imagines her Jessica Town where her stylized boards with traditional calligraphy are replaced with hand-scrawled ones, with the townsfolk claiming it was Louis' idea, which upsets her.
Eddie goes through his wallet and tells Evan that he doesn't have any cash, having spent it all on buying Tina a brown weave belt for Christmas. Evan states that he doesn't have any money either, having tied it up in mutual funds, and suggests that they tell Honey the truth since they do not have the money to buy a new nutcracker. Eddie is vehemently opposed to the suggestion, not wanting to risk losing the gift cards he is set to receive, and instead suggests that they should cover it up, claiming it is what he does whenever he makes a mistake.
Evan is hesitant, claiming it to be a delinquent course of action, and Eddie responds that while his way is messy, it always works out. He adds that he had broken plenty of things and had never been caught, and reveals that the watch Evan is currently wearing is not the original he received from a pen pal in Ecuador, but a replacement watch he had purchased from Sears. When Evan once again voices his hesitation, Eddie tells him that confessing would cause extra stress on Honey and Jessica, and would therefore ruin Christmas for everyone. Sighing, Evan begrudgingly accepts and shakes hands with Eddie; he then asks what happened to his old watch, and Eddie notifies him that it is presently within Trent's dog.
Jessica is busy rewriting the Christmas cards at the table when Louis enters with a pair of skates, asking her if she'd noticed that he'd completed the cards and if she'd like to lace up and join him on the skating rink. Jessica tells them that she cannot go as she must stay and fix "everything [he] did wrong." Louis tells her that she is going overboard and that he does not know what the big deal is. Jessica replies that her Christmas cards kick off the holiday season and that everyone expects perfection from her. Louis offers to help out so that they could go skating, asking how hard it could really be, prompting Jessica to assign him the task of building the life-sized gingerbread house, giving him until the end of the week to complete it.
Eddie and Evan ask Emery to work as a Christmas elf at the mall, with Evan suggesting that it would be great character work that would help his acting career, claiming that Brendan Fraser from The Mummy had been a mall elf as well. Eddie mentions that Emery's 30% mall discount would allow them to get something that is $400 for $280, and Emery immediately realizes that they broke Honey's nutcracker. Eddie states that even with his job at Cattleman's he would not be able to afford a new one, with Evan adding that he is too short and young for elf duty, noting that the requirement seems backwards to him. Emery politely declines as it is not his problem, but Evan reminds him what Jenny had said about family, and after his brothers plead, Emery agrees to help them out.
Jessica heads into the kitchen to check on Louis' progress, and Louis notes that it is awfully messy and that frosting is solidifying instantly, likening it to concrete. Jessica tells him that it does not bode well for him and offers to take over, but Louis remains persistent that he can do it. Jessica then slips back into her Jessica Town imagination, where she calls for a meeting on the steps of Town Hall as her citizens protest against her decision to award Louis the butcher with the contract to build their new gingerbread house library, and Mayor Jessica attempts to quell their fears by stating that Louis would quit once he sees how hard it is, allowing her to swoop in and save the day. After Mayor Jessica claims that it would take a miracle for Louis to pull it off, the imaginary Deidre responds since it is Christmas year-round in Jessica Town, miracles happen all the time.
Eddie returns home after work and regroups with Evan in his room, informing him that he sold a customer his socks. Evan begins to question why but decides it would be better not to know, especially since they need the money. Just then, Emery enters in his elf costume and Evan asks him how his first day was. Emery responds that it was awful, having to deal with an endless line of people, shoving parents and crying babies, with a rude Santa Claus as well; he then tells his brothers that he hates himself and is going to bed. Feeling bad, Evan tells Eddie that they cannot let Emery continue working, and Eddie reminds him that while his way is messy, it does work out and that Evan knew this when he signed up for it.
Louis calls in Trent to help him, and Trent uses a magnifying glass to examine the gingerbread house. Jessica then enters the kitchen, wondering why Louis stopped screaming and banging his head against the walls, and Louis responds that everything is going great. Jessica notices a smell coming from the oven, and Louis informs her that he is baking fresh gingerbread using a homemade recipe, which he and Trent would use to start building the walls. Deeming it a Christmas miracle and not wanting Louis to succeed, Jessica pushes up the timeline from the end of the week to the next day, asking him if he could handle it, and Louis replies that he can. As Jessica leaves, Trent tells Louis that there was no way they could build the life-sized gingerbread house in less than 24 hours.
Eddie, Emery and Evan head to the mall, where Eddie is helping Emery get ready for work. Emery moans that he cannot go back out there, but Eddie assures him that his suffering is almost over as he has picked up another shift at Cattleman's and that Evan was closing a deal as they spoke, and tells him that they were all in this together and to do it for the family. Evan heads to the nutcrackers vendor's stand and tries to trade one of his Beanie Babies for the nutcracker, but the vendor replies that he only takes cash.
Evan is then approached by Honey, who asks him what he's doing at the mall. She mentions that Marvin found the stocking stuffers she got him and is grateful that they are hiding his main gift for her. Evan replies that the Huang brothers are known to be dependable and rock-steady, only for Honey to mention that she saw Emery wiping his tears on a paper snowflake. As Evan looks dejectedly at his brother, Honey reminds him that she would be back later that night to retrieve her nutcracker so that she could wrap it.
Wishing to relieve Emery from his pain, Evan steals the maritime nutcracker. During the van ride home, Evan informs Eddie that Emery does not need to work as an elf anymore, and Eddie asks how much money he got from selling his Beanie Babies and if he would buy pizza for them. Evan then reveals that he stole the nutcracker and Eddie yells, citing that he is too pretty for jail.
As Jessica is setting up the garland at home, Louis calls for her, telling her that she needs him; smiling, Jessica exclaims that she knew Louis did not have it in him. Heading outside, she spots a gingerbread shack and remarks that it looks worse than she thought. Marvin tells her that it is perfect, as it represents the humble spirit of Christmas before everything became over the top and that the neighborhood loves Louis' idea to scale back.
Jessica slips back into her Jessica Town imagination, where Honey and Marvin are dancing in public. Jessica tries to get Constable Bryson to arrest them for disorderly conduct, but he informs her that she is no longer the mayor. Mayor Louis presents them with the shack as their new library; when Carol-Joan asks what he did with the money he was given to make it look nice, he reveals that he spent it on an ice rink, which the citizens of Jessica Town appreciate. Back in reality, Louis tells Jessica that the time crunch made him nervous and prevented him from adding all the bells and whistles, but that the people love it anyways. Jessica then thanks Louis for ruining her Christmas and storms off, leaving Louis and Marvin on the lawn, with the latter recommending that Louis try some eggnog.
Louis heads back home and spots Jessica tossing glitter on his hairdryer, with Jessica explaining that she is doing it to make a joke out of something he loves the way he did to her. Louis states that he thought she would be happy with his gingerbread house while Jessica scoffs and says that it is a shack. Louis replies that it may not be Princess Jasmine's palace but that everyone loves it, which is what should matter. Jessica tells him that Christmas is her holiday and that it has to be perfect, not pushed through or scaled back. Louis then tells her that a perfect Christmas to him is spending time with her, and complimenting her decorations on his chair, leaves the room.
Entering through the front door, Eddie berates Evan for stealing, adding that even he has never stolen anything before. Evan urges him to be quiet since Jenny is in the room, although Eddie claims that Jenny would not hear them since she is watching Die Hard and the rest of the world fades away for her when Bruce Willis is on television. Evan explains that he did not what came over him, that he ran into Honey at the mall, saw Emery crying, and the next thing he knew he was outside the mall.
Evan is worried that he has to go on the run and create a new life, while Eddie blames himself for pushing Evan to do things his way, although Evan reminds Eddie that he never told him to steal. Eddie then decides to return the nutcracker and come clean to Honey, telling Evan that he would bear sole responsibility. Evan points out that doing so would cause him lose his gift cards, although Eddie retorts that he hopes that taking the blame for Evan would score him points with either Santa or Jesus.
Jessica is sitting on her bed cradling her gingerbread house as she slips back into her imagination of Jessica Town, where she is now a waste gatherer alongside Deidre. Deidre points out the couples spending time together and tells Jessica that that is what Christmas is all about, and that it was a shame that they could not partake in it since their job was to work around the clock picking up trash so that the town looked perfect. Jessica then notices Mayor Louis standing off by himself, with no one to spend Christmas with.
Eddie and Evan inform Emery of the theft and enlist Emery's help in returning the nutcracker to the mall. Emery returns home and informs his brother that it was a success, explaining that he notified the vendor that he had taken it to clean at Santa's workshop and that the vendor had believed him. Just then, Honey enters with navy blue wrapping paper to wrap the nutcracker. Eddie plans to come clean, but Jenny wheels up to Honey and presents her with the nutcracker. Playing with it for a bit, Honey commends the boys for resisting the urge to play with the nutcracker. Eddie asks Jenny why she bailed them out, and she replies that she overheard them and decided to help them for the family, although she adds in Mandarin that she plans to hold this over them for a long time.
Jessica heads outside to the lawn, where Louis is standing by his shack. She apologizes for insulting the shack and explains that she was just worried that Christmas would be ruined if she didn't try to make it perfect, while Louis responds that Christmas isn't about being perfect but about being together, and that he just wants to spend it with her. Jessica tells Louis that she knows he was just trying to help when he wrote the Christmas cards and asks him if he would like to go skating, holding two pairs of skates. Louis is surprised, reminding Jessica that she was scared of getting hurt on the ice, although Jessica claims that she is good at everything she does, and that she has nothing else to do now that Louis had built the gingerbread house. Louis tells Jessica not to examine the house too closely as he cut corners, and it is revealed that Trent has been inside the shack the whole time, providing structural support to keep it standing. Trent then screams as he spots a rat inside the shack and calls for Louis, who merely walks away with Jessica.
A month later, on Christmas morning, Eddie, Emery, and Evan unwrap their gift cards, only for Jenny to demand that Eddie and Evan give their gift cards to her in order to pay back their debts. Evan then points out that Emery still has and they could split it three ways, although Emery declines, intending to spend his at a spa in order to relax from the stress of being a mall elf. On the couch, Jessica is wrapping Louis' arms when Louis presents her with a gift. Jessica points out that he could've gotten them for 50% off had he waited a day, but deems them perfect and places them within her Jessica Town set. She then imagines herself and Louis in Jessica Town skating on the ice rink, only for Louis to crash into Lao Ban Santa.

Trivia[]
- This episode was intended to be the ninth episode of the season, airing before Lou Wants to Be a Millionaire. However, the air dates of the two episodes were swapped around, possibly because the producers wished to released the Christmas-themed episode in December rather than November.
Errors/Inconsistencies[]
- At the start of the episode, Emery points out that it is only the day after Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving fell on November 25th in 1999. The events of the episode happen with the next few days, ending with Louis and Jessica going out to skate on the ice. However, on Christmas morning, Louis and Jessica discuss the injury Louis received seemingly the night before while skating, despite the fact that it would've happened nearly a month ago at that point.
Quotes[]
Jessica: Well, look who decided to finally roll out of bed. Evan: It's 5:00 in the morning. Emery: The day after Thanksgiving. Eddie: I'm still more turkey than man. Can this wait until later? |
Eddie: Thanksgiving leftovers are the best. You guys should have tasted my pancakes with turkey gravy. Emery: Why would... Evan: He's a human sewer. |
Jessica: Louis, it's 1999. It's the last Christmas of the century... No, the millennium. It has to be perfect. I'm marking the occasion with a stunning monument... A life-size gingerbread house on our lawn. Take a look at my prototype. Behold the flawless candy-cane gutters. Although, they'll be a bitch to clean once the leaves fall. Louis: Jessica, instead of adding to your list of holiday tasks, you should be subtracting. We lose you for the whole month of December. Jessica: Well, people expect a lot from me at Christmas. My cards, my caroling solos, the boys with their unique Christmas requests. Louis: Hey, boys, what do you want for Christmas this year? Eddie, Emery and Evan: Gift card. Louis: See? It gets simpler now that they're getting older. |
Eddie: We pushed him too far. Evan: It was the jawbreaker. It says it right in the damn name. Eddie: Relax, bro. We'll replace it before Honey finds out. How much could it cost? Evan: "Handmade in Germany by real Germans." It's $400! Eddie: Why does Germany always have to go over the top? |
Evan: I've got nothing. All my extra money is tied up in mutual funds. We don't have anywhere close to $400 to buy a new nutcracker. We have to tell Honey what happened. Eddie: And risk getting in trouble and losing our Christmas gift cards? I'm spending mine on a certificate to Taco Bell so I can crush tacos whenever I want. Evan: Wait, you're using a gift card to buy a gift card? Eddie: You've got to spend money to make money. We're not telling Honey. We'll just do what I always do when I make a mistake – cover it up. Evan: I don't know. Sounds delinquent. Eddie: Sure, my way sometimes gets messy, but it always works out. I've broken plenty of things and never gotten caught. You think that's your original watch? Evan: That watch was a birthday gift from my pen pal in Ecuador. Eddie: Well, this one's from Sears. |
Emery: You want me to work at the mall as a Christmas elf? Eddie: Yep. All you got to do is fill out that application. Under emergency contact, put Cindy Crawford. See what happens. Emery: Why would I ever want to do this? Evan: Well, for starters, it'll help your acting career. Think of all the great character work that you'd do. I heard that The Mummy's very own Brendan Fraser got his start as a mall elf. Eddie: You'll also get a 30% mall discount that we can all share. Think about it. Just like that, a $400 Christmas gift becomes $280. Emery: You broke Honey's nutcracker, didn't you? Evan: It was his quick math, wasn't it? Eddie: Fine. We broke it. But even with my job at Cattleman's, we still can't afford to buy a new one. Evan: And I don't meet the age and height requirements for elf duty, which feels backwards, but hey, rules are rules. Emery: Sorry, guys, but this isn't my fight. Evan: Wait. What about what Grandma said about doing things for the family? Eddie: Come on, Emery. Your brothers are down. It's Christmas. Help us out. Evan: For the family. Emery: Okay. For the family. Eddie: My man! Hey, while you're there, do you mind putting in a good word for me with Santa? It's been a real up-and-down year for me. |
Trent: You don't make anything easy, do you, boss? Louis: I give you three days of vacation a year. That's pretty easy. And I'm easy on the eyes. That's two easys. |
Eddie: Alright, bro. You loose? Need another Tic Tac? Emery: I can't go back out there. Eddie: It's almost over. I'm picking up another shift at Cattleman's, and Evan's closing a deal right now as we speak. We're all in this together. For the family. Emery: For the family. Eddie: Now go out there and throw some kids in that old man's lap. |
Eddie: How'd it go with the Beanie Babies? Evan: Fine. It went fine. Emery doesn't have to work as an elf anymore. Eddie: Really? That's great news! So, how much did you get for them? Is this a "pizza's on Evan" situation? Evan: I stole the nutcracker! Eddie: Aah! I'm too pretty for jail! |
Louis: Um... what are you doing to my sit-down hairdryer? Jessica: Making a joke out of something you love, like you did to me. Louis: Jessica, I thought you'd be happy with my gingerbread house. Jessica: Please. You built a shack. Louis: Look, I know it's not Princess Jasmine's Arabian fortress, but everyone loves it. Isn't that all that matters? Jessica: Christmas is my holiday. It has to be perfect. Not quickly pushed through, not scaled back – perfect. Louis: Well, you know what a perfect Christmas is to me? Spending time with you. |
Eddie: [to Evan] What came over you, man? I've never stolen anything in my life. I mean, a few hearts, sure, but never a piece of property. |
Eddie: This is really hard-core. Now we're sitting on a hot nutcracker. Evan: I'm gonna have to go on the run. Start a new life. Eddie: This is all my fault. I was the one who pushed you to do things my way. Evan: You never told me to steal, Eddie. Eddie: We should have just told Honey, like you said. Evan: Well, it's too late now. I'll have to wear a fake mustache until I can grow one on my own. Eddie: Let's just... return the nutcracker and come clean to Honey. Evan: We're gonna be in so much trouble. Eddie: No. I'm taking all the blame. Evan: What about the consequences? Your Christmas gift card? Eddie: Yeah, I know. I'm really hoping this scores me some points with Santa. Or Jesus. Whoever's listening. |
