"King in the North" is the nineteenth episode of the fourth season of Fresh Off the Boat. It first aired on March 20, 2018.
Synopsis[]
Honey plans a relaxing vacation before the baby comes, but Jessica turns the trip into a crazy quest to get Stephen King's endorsement for her novel. When Grandma Huang decides to move out, Louis panics and does everything he can to make sure she knows how welcome she is. Meanwhile, Eddie, Nicole and their friends plan to wear matching suits to the school dance until a dress code demands that the girls must wear dresses, leading Eddie and Nicole to rebel.

Errors/Inconsistencies[]
- Evan is stunned that he and Emery will no longer share a bedroom, believing that they would always do so even well into adulthood. By the end of the episode, Emery is unhappy with living by himself and moves back in with Evan. However, in the last season finale, Emery and Evan had separate rooms and "moved out" amicably when they moved to another house.
- Evan, Emery and Louis are able to open their bedroom windows, despite Louis stating in "The Flush" that they had been painted shut by Jessica. However, it is possible that the paint was removed when the Huangs moved out in "This Is Us".
Quotes[]
Jessica: Guess who's also having a baby? Honey: What?! Yay! I was gonna say your cheeks were looking rounder, but I wasn't sure. Honey: I'm referring to my book "A Case of a Knife to the Brain." I finally got a publication date. Jessica: What? Yay... Jessica: You think my cheeks are rounder? |
Honey: You do have a lot going on. Jessica: Yes. Honey: Ah, but remember, "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy." Honey: Is that some sort of a joke? Honey: That's a line from The Shining. Jessica: The movie, not the book. That's Kubrick Kubricking all over the work of a genius. |
Emery: Evan, I'm moving out. Grandma leaving means her room's in play, so I'm gonna take it. Evan: What? Why? Emery: Remember in An American Tail when Fievel the mouse leaves Ukraine for America after hearing that there are no cats and the streets are paved with cheese? That's what Grandma's room means to me Opportunity. Evan: We're not sharing a room anymore? Emery: It's time, Evan. I mean, how long did you think this was gonna last? |
Emery: You really think you're gonna marry Kristi Yamaguchi? Evan:' Well, yeah. After I play the field a little first. Emery: I'll tell you what I'm not gonna miss – That cocky attitude of yours. Evan: Well, if you're so anxious to leave, why don't you grab your things and get out of my room? |
Trent: Did you see this? The PTA issued a new dress code for the dance. "Boys must wear jackets and ties. Girls must wear dresses or skirts." Nicole: So, Alison and I can't wear tuxedos? Walter: Someone must've heard about our plan and tipped off the PTA. Alison: Me and Nicole can just wear orange and blue dresses. I'll take blue, so you're orange, right? Say it. Say you're orange. Nicole: The school can't tell me what to wear. Eddie: What's the big deal? Just wear a skirt. You wear them all the time. Nicole: Yeah, when I want to, not because the PTA can't handle a chick in a suit. They expect everyone to look and act a certain way. There's a term for that, you know? Brian: No, I don't know. What is it? Nicole: Gender conformity. That's what Anthony Kiedis from the Red Hot Chili Peppers calls it. Dave: Flea? Nicole: No. Not Flea. Anthony Kiedis. Dave: I thought that was Flea's real name. Nicole: Look, it's not about dresses and suits. What they're really trying to say is that girls need to like boys and boys need to like girls. They want to make us all the same, but some of us aren't. Alison: Brava. I agree. She should be able to wear whatever orange clothes she wants. |
Emery: ♪ Somewhere out there ♪ ♪ Beneath the pale moonlight ♪ Evan: ♪ Someone's thinking of me ♪ ♪ And loving me tonight ♪ ♪ And even though I know how very far apart we are ♪ Emery: ♪ It helps to think we might be wishing ♪ ♪ On the same bright star ♪ Louis: ♪ And when the night wind starts to sing a lonesome lullaby ♪ Emery, Evan and Louis: ♪ It helps to think we're sleeping ♪ Underneath the same big sky ♪ Louis: [deep voice] Uh, hey. It's past your bedtime, boys. Emery: [deep voice] Uh, just getting some fresh air. Evan: [deep voice] Checking on Mommy's snapdragons. |
Eddie: You were right. The school can't tell us what to wear. You're going to the dance. Nicole: Eddie, they obviously don't want me there. It's easier for everyone if I just don't go. Eddie: Yeah, that's why you have to go. I know what it's like to be treated differently because you're not the same as everyone else. It sucks. But if we don't take a stand, then we are the same as everyone else. Nicole: I can't believe you shaved your legs. Eddie: If I'm gonna show 'em, I'm gonna show 'em, you know? I'll cut through the air when I spin, like a dolphin. |
Jessica: That's what The Shining is all about. Jack Torrance wouldn't let anything get in the way of his writing. That's why he's a hero. Honey: He was a maniacal alcoholic who lost his mind and tried to bludgeon his family with an axe. Jessica: Mallet. In the book, it was a mallet! Honey: You have been so obsessed with getting this quote you barely even stopped when I went into false labor. And you told Louis you were gonna call him back and you never did. Do you even know what's going on with him? The Shining is about not letting one thing consume you. For Jack, it was alcohol. For you, it's the book. I know how important this is to you, but you have to make time for other important things in your life. |
Eddie: Moms, welcome home! I wanna hear all about your trip, but I gotta return the skirt I wore to the dance and then go through the yearbook with Nicole to find out who those bisexual parking-lot sirens were. |
