"Lou Wants to Be a Millionaire" is the ninth episode of the sixth season of Fresh Off the Boat. It first aired on November 29, 2019.
Synopsis[]
Louis starts to fantasize about passing the Cattleman's Ranch torch to Eddie but is worried about his menu choices. Meanwhile, Jessica is still struggling to get on board with Emery's new acting hobby. And when Louis scores a spot on "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire", host Regis Philbin offers Louis and Jessica more answers than million-dollar questions.
Plot[]
The Huang family, minus Grandma Jenny, are watching Who Wants to Be a Millionaire at home. After Louis gets an answer right, picking "C" not only because the answer to always be "C" but because he actually knew it, Eddie tells him that he should be on the show. Louis replies that he would never be chosen to be on television, while Evan points out that Jessica had been selected for a game show in the past, having appeared on Wheel of Fortune. Jessica tells Evan not to compare her accomplishments to Louis', and Louis himself states that in order to be on the show, he would have to call in, pass the screening process, and then out of thousands and thousands of applicants, be one out of only ten to be chosen; he tells his sons there would be no chance he would make it on the show.
However, Louis applies and having passed the screening process, is selected to be on the show. Meeting host Regis Philbin. Regis tells Louis to introduce himself to the audience before they begin, and Louis tells them his name and mentions his family; when Regis asks him what he does for work, Louis replies that he is a business consultant and the owner of Cattleman's Ranch Steakhouse, and that he wouldn't be able to do it without Eddie's assistance.
He then flashes back to Cattleman's, where Matthew Chestnut is discussing spots on the silverware and wants to throw them out. Eddie tells Chestnut to simply add rinse agent to the dishwasher, and Louis commends Eddie for preserving the silverware. Eddie tells Louis that he is there to support him and discloses that he went through their books and that their profits are up 10%. When Louis asks how, Eddie explains that cutting back on garnishes saved them three cents per plate and that he created an incentive where if a table orders more than four appetizers, he would perform a belly roll for them. Louis tells Eddie that he loves his initiative, to which Eddie assures his father that he has been increasing his performance since Louis is busy with consulting. Just then, Trent Masterson informs Eddie that a table has ordered their fifth appetizer, and Eddie performs his belly roll.
Back in the present, Regis asks Louis if he's ready to play and the game begins. In the audience, Emery idolizes Regis, informing Jessica that Regis had spent more time on camera than anybody else in history. Jessica scoffs that being in front of a camera is not an achievement and that the same feat is accomplished by newborns and safari animals, whom she labels as lazy. Eddie takes offense to her remark, stating that safari animal stalking their prey through the Serengeti for three nights is not lazy, leaving Emery impressed at his knowledge and use of the word "Serengeti." Jessica tells her sons to quiet down so that she could signal Louis the answers in order to prevent Louis from losing a million dollars, and mentions that security had confiscated her purse snacks because Regis could not focus if there was a crunch in the audience. Emery tells her that, as a fellow actor, he understands since silence is necessary to focus on one's craft, causing Jessica to scoff that Regis reading words out loud is not a craft.
Regis reminds Louis that he has three lifelines, consisting of 50:50, Ask the Audience and Phone-a-Friend, the latter where he can call anyone for help, and Louis replies that he as a guy for that. At home, Evan is sitting in the living room, phone in hand, surrounded by encyclopedias. He mentions that all he needs to do is keep the phone lines clear, but at that moment, Alistair Cain, dubbed "The Science Brain," appears on the television, offering to answer any science question for the next hour. While Evan is conflicted, wishing to speak with him, Jenny voices her attraction to Alistair.
Regis asks Louis his first question of the game – at what temperature does water boil – with the options being 32 degrees Fahrenheit, 0 degrees Celsius, 100 degrees Celsius, or the temperature of the sun. Louis then flashes back to when he walked into the kitchen and admonished Eddie and Jenny for allowing the kettle to hiss, telling them that it had been at 100 degrees Celsius for the past three minutes. Eddie tells Louis that Jenny has been teaching him how to make bao zi, a Chinese dish.
Louis is surprised that Eddie has been taking notes and footnotes, and Eddie explains that he has done so since Jenny does not write any recipes and therefore thought it would be good to have it written down before she passes away, but does not say the last few words out loud upon noticing Louis shaking his head and Jenny watching him. Louis then tells Eddie that if he keeps up this initiative, he may consider passing down Cattleman's to him some day. Snapping himself out of his thoughts, Louis tells Regis that the answer is 100 degrees Celsius.
Jessica, who was unable to answer the question herself, blames it on her lack of snacks and decides to go out to the vending machine when Regis calls for a break. Emery decides to tag along with her so that he can distribute his headshots around the studio. Jessica gets a bag of nuts from a vending machine while Emery drops off some of his photos, but the pair are notified by a security guard that they are not allowed to re-enter the stage once they have left. On stage, Louis and Regis are getting their makeup touched up when Regis brings up how hot it must get at Cattleman's. Louis then remembers walking into the Cattleman's kitchen and seeing Eddie's new fusion dish, the Cow Bao, which involves him putting burger pieces in the bao zi, and how he refused when Eddie asked to put it on the menu.
With the game resuming, Regis asks Louis what the common phrase for lateral epicondylitis is, and Louis remembers where he heard that term before. After rejecting Eddie's suggestion to have the Cow Bao on the menu as he did not want to mess with what was working, Eddie countered that China has been existing far longer than Cattleman's; however, Louis reminded him that they are a Western steakhouse and that an Asian fusion dish is not part of their brand.
Eddie seemingly accepted Louis' reasoning, although not before accusing Louis of being a control freak. Just then, Trent walked in with his arm in a sling, disclosing that he had lateral epicondylitis, also known as tennis elbow. Hoping that Trent was right, Louis answers "tennis elbow" and whoops in celebration upon answering correctly, and Regis congratulates him once more.
Needing to find a way to get pass the security guard so they can make their way back inside, Emery suggests they act their way in. Jessica scoffs at the idea, claiming that she would not be acting as she is not a monkey, only for Emery to respond that he is surprised she is not on board with acting as it is a form of manipulation where one lies and controls the audience, and Jessica agrees to act.
Meanwhile, Evan goes to the Ellis household to ask Honey if he could use her phone to call Alistair Cain while keeping his home phone line free in case Louis calls, and Honey agrees to do him the favor as long as he allows her to borrow one of his belts in the future. Marvin then tosses the cordless phone at Evan, who not only fails to catch it, but drops his own home cordless phone. Evan then wonders why both phones are identical, and Honey explains that Jessica purchased both after coming across a two-for-one deal, and then sold her one of the phones for five dollars off full price.
For $8,000, Regis asks Louis how many hearts an octopus has, and Louis recalls Chestnut showing him his lower back tattoo, which he refers to as a "champ stamp," of an octopus. Chestnut had told Louis that he had gotten the octopus tattoo since an octopus has three hearts, and therefore represented the three loves of his life – his son Max Chestnut, CB radio, and octopus. Just then, Eddie had approached Louis and informed him that he believed his Cow Bao would be successful, as he ran the numbers and learned that there was a 63% uptick in Asian cuisine popularity and that fusion dishes were currently "in," and added that since they cut their square burger patties into circles for their burgers, they would be able to use the excess corner meat for the Cow Bao, therefore literally cutting corners.
While Louis was hesitant, claiming that he was unsure if their clientele would be able to adjust and accept it, Eddie revealed that he had already put them to the test by offering some to Trent and two of their customers, with one customer proclaiming that she would pay a hundred dollars to eat it. Trent then told Louis that he has to put it on the menu, and Louis informed Eddie that he would do so. Regis snaps Louis out of his reverie, and Louis answers that an octopus has three hearts, answering correctly yet again.
Having obtained the security ID tags of two employees named Gary and Esther, Emery and Jessica prepare to act their way back in, with a new security guard named Ronnie being posted outside the door. Speaking in a slightly deeper voice, Emery passes himself off as a light technician who needs to fix a spotlight for Regis, and Ronnie believes him.
However, when Ronnie asks who Jessica is and Emery replies that she is his colleague, Jessica tells Ronnie that Emery is lying and that she is the boss while he is her lying employee. Emery then takes Jessica aside and asks her what she is doing, and she responds that it would be unbelievable for her to be his colleague since she birthed him, adding that acting is a waste of a time. Hurt, Emery walks back to Ronnie and makes his way in, but tells Ronnie that Jessica is not with him, leaving her stranded outside.
Back at the Ellis household, Evan and Honey wait on the couch with two phones in hand while Marvin heads to the car to use the car phone. Evan hears one of the phones ring and answers it, hearing Marvin on the other end drinking his Scotch. Giving the phone to Honey and telling her it was her problem to deal with, Evan decides to check if his home phone line is still clear, only to hear Jenny talk to Alistair about his man parts, and Evan tells her to get off the phone.
On the show, Regis calls for another break and asks Louis to meet his family; however, looking into the audience, Louis sees that only Eddie is there. Beckoning him over, Eddie and Regis meet, and Eddie tells Regis about the Cow Bao fusion dish. Regis responds that he would like to try one and Eddie asks if he can mention it on the air, which Regis agrees to do while Louis attempts to curb. Eddie replies that it would be great publicity, especially with Regis chiming in that 28 million people watch the show, but Louis responds that he doesn't want to false advertise since the Cow Bao will not be going on the menu.
Upset, Eddie calls Louis a control freak while Louis snaps back that he does not a "dumb Chinese dish" on his menu. The game then resumes, but Regis calls for another break due to "technical difficulties" so that the father and son can mend their relationship, but notifies them that they only have 90 seconds to do so. Eddie asks Louis if he's ashamed of Chinese food and their culture, and calls Louis a sellout as he walks back to the audience.
Outside, Jessica tries to tempt Ronnie with snacks, and while he is tempted, he whispers that he cannot let her in. Emery emerges, informing Ronnie that he is needed inside to bounce a guy in Section G, assuring the security guard that he would temporarily cover for him. As Ronnie leaves, Jessica thanks Emery for coming back for her and tries to enter the stage, but finds her entry blocked by Emery, who tells her that he would only let her in if she admits that acting is not a waste of time, as it means a lot to him. Jessica tells him that she doesn't like acting because to her it is just lying, which her father did a lot of growing up, disappearing for months on end and returning smelling like women's perfume and cheap booze, and choking up, wonders how her father could have done that to her mother. Touched, Emery replies that he never knew that, only for Jessica to claim that it was because she just made it up and was just acting. She tells him that the reason she is against him acting is because she knows many people try to become an actor and fail, and that she doesn't want him to go through that. However, she adds that she will act like she's okay with him acting if that's what he really wants to do, and accepting this, Emery allows her to enter and the two make their way back to their seats.
Regis asks Louis if he's really ashamed to serve Chinese food, and Louis replies that he is not, but that the reasoning goes back to when he first opened his restaurant. Upon purchasing the strip club to convert to his restaurant, the agent asked him what kind of name he would pick, offering various names for Chinese restaurants. Offended, Louis responded that he was not opening a Chinese restaurant but instead the most American restaurant of all, a Western steakhouse, only for the agent to ask how the fortune cookies would look like.
Louis tells Regis that he is not a sellout but just does not want people to assume that he was opening a Chinese restaurant because he was Chinese, stating that he was American as well and wanted his boys to know they were more than one thing. Regis replies that Eddie already got that message since his fusion dish was essentially Chinese cheeseburgers, and had thus embraced being both Chinese and American. Realizing that Eddie was a fusion, Louis thanks Regis for the talk, and he replies that this is why he asks the questions.
With the game resuming, Regis asks a question worth $32,000 – "What part of a computer processes memory?" – with the answers being "monitor," "RAM," "hard drive" or "gizmos." Unsure of the answer, Louis tells Regis that he wishes to use his Phone-A-Friend lifeline to call his son. At the Huang house, Evan storms in, demanding Jenny to get off the phone. Just then, the phone rings, and Evan answers it believing it to be Regis. Instead, the caller is a woman who claims to be a producer for Warner Bros., intending to have Emery audition for a part in the upcoming Harry Potter movie, although Evan tells her he is busy playing Millionaire and asks her to never call again.
On stage, Louis' "phone call" is to Eddie, in the audience. Louis apologizes to Eddie, telling him that when he started the restaurant, he wanted to be seen as American, but that he now realizes that it does not have to be one or the other and it makes him happy that it is a lesson Eddie did not need to learn. He adds that he would be honored to pass on Cattleman's to Eddie when the time came, much to the audience's appreciation. However, with the time ticking, Louis asks Eddie what the answer is and Eddie reminds Louis of his prior assertion that the answer is always "C.' Louis answers with C for hard drive, but is informed that he has gotten it wrong and therefore has lost the game and the money he accumulated.
Sometime later, the Huang family watch the game at Cattleman's, watching Louis lose on television. Evan remarks that he can't believe Louis wasted the lifeline on Eddie instead of him, and Louis apologizes for losing out on the million dollars, although Eddie points out that he was nowhere close to a million. Jessica tells Louis that it's okay and that money isn't everything, and Emery asks her if she is acting, to which she confirms she is.
Trent serves them with seven Cow Baos, telling Eddie that he owes his own table a belly roll, and that Chestnut had been filling in during his absence, noticing Chestnut pulling up his shirt and parading his "champ stamp." Trent then gives Jenny the phone, Alistair Cain calling to tell her that he is outside and has the globe, and Jenny hands Trent the phone before wheeling away.

Trivia[]
- The episode title is a reference to the game show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, which is featured in this episode.
- Louis getting the answers of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire correct after they all had something to do with a memory and/or experience in his past is a reference to the film Slumdog Millionaire.
- Evan mentions Jessica having been on Wheel of Fortune. ("B as in Best Friends")
- This episode was intended to be the tenth in the season, following "Jessica Town", although upon airing, the two episodes were swapped around.
Errors/Inconsistencies[]
- Eddie states that Cattleman's has been around for five years, but in the previous episode, he mentioned that they had been in Florida for six years. However, as they both moved to Florida and opened Cattleman's in "Pilot", set in 1995, it has only been four years.
- Eddie states that the year is 2000; however, the year is still 1999 at this point in the series. The year would not become 2000 until "A Seat at the Table", two episodes later.
- A producer from Warner Bros. calls to ask Emery to audition for a role in the then-upcoming film, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. However, the film, known as Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone outside the United States, specifically cast only British, Irish and Scottish actors, meaning that Emery, as an American, would not be eligible for a part.
Quotes[]
Eddie: I got you, Dad. Eyes on the coin. In fact, I went through the books, and our profits are up 10%. Louis: Really? How? I-I mean, good. Eddie: I saw that if we cut back on the garnishes, we can save three cents per plate. And also I gave the staff some new incentives. Louis: Like what? Eddie: Well, every time a table orders more than four appetizers, I perform my patented belly-roll for them. Louis: Oh, smart. I am loving this initiative, Eddie. Eddie: Thanks, Dad. I know you've been so busy with consulting, so I've been upping my game. |
Regis: So, Louis, you ready to play? Louis: You bet your ass I am! Regis: Family show, and away we go! |
Emery: Wow. Regis Philbin. Regis "I Can Smile While I Talk" Philbin. Did you know he's spent more hours on screen than anybody in history? Jessica: Sitting in front of a camera is not an achievement. You know who else does that? Newborns and safari animals. Both surprisingly lazy. Eddie: Lazy? You spend three nights stalking prey through the Serengeti. Emery: [impressed] "Serengeti." |
Jessica: Apparently, your idol Regis can't "work" if there's a crunch sound in the audience. Emery: As a fellow actor, I get it. You need quiet to focus on your craft. Jessica: Craft? This is just reading words out loud. |
Evan: Alistair Cain the Science Brain? He's the only person in the world with a PhD and a Florida Kids' Choice Award. Why now? I could ask him to peer review my fruit fly project for the science fair. Jenny: I would like to peer review his buns. |
Eddie: Grandma's teaching me to make bao zi. It's sick! Look! Jenny: Perfect consistency, like a lamb's scrotum. Louis: Okay, Ma. Eddie, you've shown a lot of devotion to cooking lately. Taking notes? And footnotes? Eddie: Grandma's never written down a recipe, so I thought it'd be good to get them down in case sh... Just in case. |
Jessica: We gotta get in there. You go left, I'll go right. He'll take one us, but the survivor will always remember the other. Emery: I've got a better idea. We're gonna act our way in. Jessica: Me? Act? I am no monkey. Eddie: Honestly, Mom, I'm surprised you're not more on board with acting. It's basically manipulation. Jessica: You bought yourself five seconds. Go. Emery: You put on a performance and control the audience... Manipulation. Jessica: Okay, let's act our way in. I may have to smile. Don't be alarmed. |
Evan: Wait, which one is ours? Why are these phones identical? Honey: Oh, your mom found a killer two-for-one deal on cordless phones. She got them and gave me one... for $5 off full price. Evan: Why is Mommy such a genius? |
Louis: That's very strange, Chestnut. Chestnut: Oh, uh, lower back tattoos were actually very masculine in the '80s. They called them "champ stamps." |
Eddie: Pops, I thought about what you said and did some research on why the Cow Bao will work at Cattleman's. It's the year 2000. Fusion is hot right now. There's a 63% uptick in Asian cuisine popularity. People are learning that dumplings aren't just a term of endearment. Louis: You ran these numbers? Eddie: I did. You know how we cut our square burger patties to make them circles? We can use the corner meat for the Cow Bao. We're literally cutting corners. |
Jenny: That globe work on your man parts? Alistair: Uh... Jenny: Mm, question answered. |
Jessica: Thanks for coming back to get me. Let's go. Emery: No, I came back because I wanted to talk. Fun fact, you can talk anywhere. Now let's go. Emery: I'll only let you in if you admit acting is not a waste of time. It means a lot to me, Mom. Really. Jessica: Acting is not a waste of time. Emery: Then why do you always insult it? Jessica: I guess I never liked you acting because... well, I never liked it. To me, acting is just people lying, which my father did too much of when I was growing up. He would disappear for months on end, only to return smelling like women's perfume and cheap booze. How could he do that to Mom, to all of us? Emery: I never knew that. Jessica: That's because I made it up. Emery: Did you just... manipulate me? Jessica: No, I just acted you. Truth is, I know how many people try to make it as an actor and fail, and I don't want you to go through that. But if you decide acting's what you want, I can act like I'm okay with it. |
Louis: I'm not a sellout. I didn't want people to assume I'd open a Chinese restaurant just because I'm Chinese. I'm American, too. So are my boys. I want them to know they're more than just one thing. Regis: Seems like Eddie got the message. Louis: What do you mean? Regis: Your boy's making Chinese cheeseburgers. He's embracing being Chinese and American. Louis: A fusion. Thanks for the talk, Regis. Regis: That's why Regis asks the questions. |
Woman: Hi, I'm a producer at Warner Bros. calling for Emery Huang? We got his "brooding" headshot and want him to audition for a Harry Potter movie. Evan: No, I'm trying to play "Millionaire"! Never call again! |
