History[]
- "Still better than my father-in-law, the gesticulator. He's like one of those, like, inflatable tube men at the car wash. Except a tube man wouldn't punch through the last self-portrait your Nana ever painted."
- ―Honey Ellis to Jessica Huang
Mervin Ellis had two children, sons Marvin and Mervin, before remarrying a much younger woman named Candy.
After his second granddaughter Maria was born, Marvin took Maria to spend time with Mervin, allowing Honey to have a baby-free week back in Orlando.[1]
A year later, Honey informed Jessica Huang about how she did not like Mervin's gesticulating habits, which caused him to flail his arms around and hit objects, most often breaking her priceless family heirlooms. After Honey got into a fight with Jessica, Jessica retaliated by inviting Candy and Mervin to help Honey take care of Maria and Liza. Arriving at Marvin's house, Mervin immediately broke one of Honey's vases.
Mervin then left his wife to take care of the kids while he and Marvin went to Louis Huang's Cattleman's Ranch Steakhouse, where he observed Louis and Eddie talk to him, Marvin and Trent Masterson about how to give Evan "The Talk." Marvin explained that when he was younger, Mervin gave "The Talk" using just hand gestures, prompting Mervin to repeat those gestures. Eddie then asked why Mervin looked like Marvin's brother, to which Marvin explained that in the Ellis family, the men looked like old men by the time they were 25, and then just lived on as old men for the next 70 years. Mervin then informed a stunned Eddie that he had had crow's feet since he was in college.[2]
