"Mommy and Me" is the thirteenth episode of the sixth season of Fresh Off the Boat. It first aired on January 31, 2020.
Synopsis[]
Fresh off of a parenting brag to Honey, Jessica finds herself overwhelmed by a heartbroken Evan who wants to spend more time with her. Meanwhile, Emery announces his newfound veganism and faces the wrath of The Burger Boys - Louis and Eddie.
Plot[]
The Huang family, along with Honey and Marvin Ellis, are having dinner at Louis Huang's Cattleman's Ranch Steakhouse. Emery criticizes Louis for eating a burger, prompting Marvin to ask Louis if he is going to accept Emery's criticism without fighting back. Louis explains that they have been a lot of burgers recently, and Eddie informs Marvin that he, Louis and Emery have formed a club known as the "Burger Boys" and that they test out burger joints who advertise their burgers as being the best in Orlando. Louis adds that it is a really fun way to hang out with two of his sons, glaring at Evan, who merely rebuffs him and says that food is just brain-fuel and that his girlfriend Sicily makes nutrition bars so that they can focus on the two things that really matter – science and holding hands. Eddie then makes fun of Evan, asking him if he's touched Sicily's knee yet, and Evan replies that he almost has.
Across the table, Honey thanks Jessica for inviting them to dinner so late since she cannot leave the house while Maria is awake. Jessica advises Honey to just walk out the door, and Honey explains that Maria is so clingy and has a tantrum whenever she leaves the room. Jessica tells Honey to just ignore Maria and to teach her that she doesn't get attention by yelling but through hard work and academic achievement. Honey asks if that worked with her boys, and Jessica replies that her sons never needed it as they're so independent and have freed her up for her next task. Standing up and clinking against her wine glass, Jessica tells the others that she would be recording an audiobook version of her novel, "A Case of a Knife to the Brain."
Jessica is recording her audiobook at home when Honey barges in, apologizing for the interruption. Jessica asks Honey why Maria is attached to her leg after having given her sound advice, and Honey explains that while Jessica's advice worked perfectly, she began to miss the clinginess and the affection since she knew Maria would not be her little girl forever. Honey then asks Jessica if she does not miss when her sons were that young, and Jessica responds that she does not, and that she taught them to be independent so that she can focus on her own life. As she attempts to resume her recording, Evan walks in, crying, telling them that his girlfriend Sicily dumped him. Jessica leaps out her chair and hugs him in an attempt to console him, and Honey points out that she was right and that Jessica cannot bring herself to ignore her child, although Jessica claims that her son being heartbroken is not the same thing as a child crying for milk.
At Cattleman's, Matthew Chestnut is attempting to convince Trent Masterson to have a turkey-duck dish, known as "turducken," on the menu claiming that it is not Thanksgiving-exclusive, while Trent retorts that as a customer, if he sees something on the menu with "turd" he would just eat elsewhere. Just then, Louis walks in and announces that Burger Barrel is advertising themselves as having the best burgers in Orlando, and tells his sons that they would have to put it to the test. Eddie chimes in that Burger Barrel has no clue what they're in for when the Huangs arrive, to which Trent points out that Burger Barrel would not be against the Huangs purchasing their food and talking about it. Chestnut asks Louis if he can tag along with them, but Louis tells them that it is only for Huang boys.
Emery then announces that, after watching a PBS documentary called "Fatal Farming," he has decided to become a vegan, which prompts Chestnut to yell at him and refer to his new lifestyle choice as disgusting, with Trent apologizing to Louis and adding that no one ever expects it to be their own child. Eddie, confused, asks what a vegan is, and Emery explains that a vegan is like a vegetarian except they do not consume any animal products, including dairy and eggs. He tells him that it does not have to be a big deal and that he can still be one of the Burger Boys as it would still be fun to hang out; Louis adds that Emery is correct and that he's sure it would all be fine, only for Trent to liken the situation to his sister Tiffany, whom the family stopped acknowledging after she stopped drinking and thus stopped being fun.
At home, Jessica is reading a book while Evan sleeps on the couch with his head in her lap. Jenny wheels in, asking if they have any Gatorade as she and her new boyfriend have been having some fun in the garage. Jessica tells Jenny to keep it down as Evan had a tough day and is trying to sleep, and Jenny retorts that Jessica is giving Evan too much attention and asks her how come she isn't abiding by the advice she gave Honey. Jessica tells Jenny that she eavesdrop too much and that her habit of doing so would come back to bite her, only for Jenny to respond that the last thing that bit her is in the garage waiting for her. Jessica states that it is different since Evan is a teenager and that he would go back to normal by the next day unlike Maria; Jenny then wheels away, telling Jessica that she needs to get back to her boyfriend and to not come in no matter how many times she yells "help," leaving Jessica with a disgusted look on her face.
Louis, Eddie and Emery head to Burger Barrel, while the latter eats tofu and a carrot while Louis and Eddie eat burgers. The two began to feel like it is not as fun without Emery participating, and Louis offers Emery a bite, although he turns it down citing that he is serious about his veganism. Eddie and Louis then decide to prematurely end their lunch as it is not as fun as it used to be; Emery suggests that the trio pay a visit to Cafe Fiona, a vegan restaurant that claims they have the best Veggie Burger in Orlando, so that the Burger Boys can put it to the test, while Louis and Eddie reluctantly agree.
Jessica is in the kitchen preparing tea to soothe her vocal cords when Evan appears. Jessica notes that he looks refreshed and Evan replies that spending time with her always makes him feel better. As she moves to leave the kitchen, she senses him tailing her and asks what is happening, and Evan tells her that since spending time with her yesterday felt so good, he figured he would do so today as well. Jessica acquiesces and tells him that he may observe her process, and heads to the table to continue recording her audiobook. However, as she sits down, Evan keeps moving closer to her, despite her attempts to put some space between them. Fed up, she pushes out the door and tells him he would be late to catch the bus. Evan then asks if Jessica would be waiting for him when he got home and what room she would be in, only for Jessica to close the door on him.
Jessica tells Honey and Jenny that Evan has become even more clingy than ever and that she thought she had raised him to be the perfect machine, and asks them how to fix someone who has been dumped. Honey responds that she wishes she could help but that she never had her heart broken, adding that her nicknames were high school were "Honey and the Heartbreaker' and something else she decides she shouldn't share. Jessica states that she never had her heart broken either, and that one guy who tried, who was a senator, woke up the next morning on his mattress floating down the Potomac River. Jenny adds that she always does the dumping and that she has already dumped 14 boyfriends this year; just then, her boyfriend Logan walks into the den and mentions that Jenny wanted to talk with him, and Jenny tells the women that now the number would be 15. Honey asks if the man is Jenny's nurse while Jessica realizes that she just needs to talk to some "duds" who have been dumped.
Louis, Eddie and Emery head to Cafe Fiona to try the "best veggie burger in Orlando." As Emery goes to get their food Louis and Eddie muse that they could've been at Leroy's Burger Town trying a burger with scrambled eggs in it, remarking that it would be too weird to eat it around Emery, although Louis believes Emery's veganism might just be a phase. Emery returns with their food, and although Emery seems to enjoy it, Louis and Eddie do not, with Louis whispering to Eddie the possibility that this might not be a phase for Emery.
Jessica gathers Marvin, Chestnut, and Logan at Cattleman's, telling them that she has done so because she assumes they've been dumped in the past and wishes to ask how they rebounded to become mostly functioning adults. Marvin tells her that his high-school sweetheart was a 50 year old woman in Maine and that his father had taught him to move south and date younger if he got his heart broken. Jessica deems his advice useless and begrudgingly moves on to Chestnut, who tells her that he and "Madame Heartbreak" go way back and that whenever 'she' visits, he would just drink whiskey and watch an old Western movie while crying. Deeming his advice useless as well, Jessica moves on to Logan, who is distracted. Logan explains that he is hungover after having a wild night out with his boys, which resulted in him forgetting all about Jenny. Jessica remarks that the idea is not half-bad and that perhaps a party would get Evan off her back. Chestnut then asks Marvin if the woman he dated in high school was a thin woman in glasses, as he grew up in the area, and Marvin assures him that she was in fact "a tub of clam chowder with perfect vision."
Returning home, Jessica resumes her audiobook recording when Evan returns from school, asking her if she can make him a healthy snack, constantly referring to her as "Mommy." Jessica instead suggests that he call his friends and invite them for a sleepover; Evan counters that he thought she told him that sleepovers were a scam to get free babysitting, and while Jessica replies that she still believes that, she decided to make an exception. Evan then thanks her and goes to call his friends, and Jessica smiles when Evan confirms that he doesn't need her around to do so. She then attempts to continue her recording, only to be interrupted by Emery, who asks her where Louis and Eddie are, and Jessica informs him that they went to Leroy's Burger Town, upsetting Emery.
Louis and Eddie are at Leroy's Burger Town, having invited Trent. Trent begins to insult his burger even before eating it, and apologizes, citing that he just wishes to please them as he knows they criticize their food. Louis advises him not to force the criticism and to find it naturally, while Eddie tells him that they are pleased that he is here with them. Emery then storms into the restaurant and berates his father and brother for sneaking off without him, and is further maddened when he realizes Trent is there, asking them what happened to the "Huang-boys only rule." Louis retorts by asking him what happened to eating meat, and when Emery responds that eating meat hurts the animals, Eddie replies that of course it would hurt the animals as it is meat. Trent apologizes for his presence, but Emery tells him that he doesn't have to and that he seems very nice, and tells Louis and Eddie that he would just leave since they clearly do not want him there.
Evan and his friends are in him room playing "Truth or Math" as Jessica stands by the door, asking Evan if he's okay. Evan tells her that he is and asks her to please leave as Zack was the first one of them to choose "Truth" and believed it would get weird. As Jessica leaves, Evan asks Zack if he would rather kiss Jessica or Geoff's mom. Jessica goes downstairs, where Honey and Jenny are playing Go Fish, and tells Jenny that her ex Logan had some sound advice. Honey then asks Jenny if she was paying Logan, and she replies that she wasn't paying him with money. Jessica voices her elation at finally having some time to herself and mentions how annoying Evan was when he was clingy and that he was too much, imitating him as he constantly called her "Mommy." Just then, she hears the refrigerator door close and turns around to see Evan watching her, having overheard what she said. Over-pouring orange juice in his glass so that it spills onto the kitchen floor, he "apologizes" for being "too much."
Jenny tells Evan to stop wasting the juice as he made his point to Jessica, while Jessica tries to clarify that Evan must have misheard her, only for Jenny to reveal that she recorded Jessica and to playback the audio, stating that no one learned from the Watergate scandal. Evan then walks away, telling Jessica that he now has a few more cracks in his broken heart. Honey tells Jessica that it was okay and that parents were allowed to mess up once in a while, and Jenny discloses that Louis still comes to her for motherly support. Jenny then plays a recording of Honey complaining that she doesn't have the stamina to keep up with Marvin in bed, although the playback is prematurely cut short by Honey.
Louis and Eddie make their way to Emery and Evan's room, where Emery berates them for choosing "undercooked meat blood" over their own flesh and blood. Louis angrily retorts that he owns a steakhouse and thus meat paid for everything Emery has; Eddie chimes in asking Emery if he thinks he is too good for meat now. Louis begins to take Emery's things away, claiming that he must be too good for his stuff if he's too good for meat, and Emery tells him that he never judged Louis for eating or selling meat and that he even respected him, and that all he wanted in return was for him and his choices to be respected as well. As Emery leaves, Zack asks Louis if the sleepover is still happening as Evan is no longer there, adding that ending the sleepover would be a relief as he needs to use his home bathroom.
Jessica goes to her bedroom and finds Evan sitting on her bed, and he explains that he isn't on her bed because he's clingy but because he has nowhere else to go. Jessica informs him that she feels awful for hurting her and that she even called her mother for advice, although her mother sent her to voicemail. Despite not being able to speak to her mother, Jessica tells Evan that wanting to call her mother made her realize that sometimes a child just needs their mother. Jessica adds that Evan is always so perfect to her that she forgets that it doesn't mean he won't struggle, and that she was glad she was there to help him; additionally, she states that it was wrong of her to get annoyed at him for needing her support and that getting over heartbreak would take time. Evan then admits that he might have been overdoing it and that still referring to her as "Mommy" was a bit much, instead deciding to call her "Mother," although Jessica tells him to just call her "Mom," citing that it was the easiest thing to yell during a kidnapping.
Emery heads to Cattleman's after receiving a handwritten invitation from Eddie slipped under his door, and there his brother and father apologize for booting him out of the Burger Boys. Eddie mentions that the three of them aren't a trio often and Louis claims that it was never supposed to be about the burgers but about hanging out and bonding with one another. Louis confesses that it was hard for him to not perceive Evan's veganism as a judgment against him, but Emery assures him that he would never judge Louis, as Louis does not claim to the best in town. Louis and Eddie then present Emery with their own homemade veggie burger, proclaiming it to be better than the one they had at Cafe Fiona's.
Jessica suggests to Evan to use her audiobook as a platform to voice his feelings against Sicily dumping him, which Evan deems to be therapeutic. Jessica tells him that while she's glad it is helping him, he would not get any royalties from her audiobook, and he replies that he knows, calling her "Mom" for the first time. Meanwhile, Louis, Eddie and Emery return home to find Chestnut and Jenny finishing their date, where Chestnut compliments Jenny for knowing her Matlock trivia. Chestnut then tells Louis that he was dating Jenny because he heard there was an open spot in the Burger Boys and that Louis had chosen Trent over him, and before leaving, tells Louis that it is now his move, prompting Emery to remark to Louis that he employs some odd people. Jenny pipes in that she enjoys men with low self-esteem as they would do anything, and she winks, the Huang men groan in disgust.

- However, this is lampshaded when Trent adds that his family never talks about Tiffany because they found her to no longer be fun after she stopped drinking.
Quotes[]
Eddie: We formed a club, the Burger Boys. Whenever a place has the balls to advertise the "Best Burger in Orlando," it's the Burger Boys' job to put it to the test. Louis: It's been a really fun way to hang out with two of my sons. Evan: Food is just brain-fuel. My girlfriend Sicily makes nutrition bars so we can focus on what matters – Science and holding hands. Eddie: You touch her knee yet? Evan: Shut up! Almost. |
Jessica: Hey! Eyes on me! I am pleased to announce that I will finally be recording an audiobook of my under-appreciated novel, "A Case of a Knife to the Brain." I'll be doing an R-rated version and an X-rated version. Marvin: Ooh! Louis: You should've said all ears on you. It's an audiobook. |
Jessica: Honey, why is there a child on your leg? I gave you perfect advice. She should be obedient by now. Honey: Actually, your advice worked too well. Jessica: Oh, yes. My curse. Honey: I ignored her, and she calmed down, but then I started to miss all that clinginess and affection. Jessica: Oh, yes. Your curse. Honey: I guess, but right now, she's my precious little girl. Don't you miss when your boys were this young? Jessica: No. I put in the work, and I taught them to study hard, feed themselves, so now I can focus on my own life again. |
Honey: Evan. What's wrong? Evan: Sicily broke up with me. Jessica: Oh, my precious little boy! Come here! It's okay! Honey: I told you it's hard to ignore your children. Jessica: This is totally different. This isn't a baby crying for more milk. This is a beautiful young man, who has been betrayed by an evil, ugly witch. |
Louis: We've got another one, boys! Looks like Burger Barrel thinks they have the "Best Burger in Orlando." Eddie: Those suckers don't know what they're in for. Trent: You mean when you buy their food and talk about it? |
Emery: Look, I wasn't sure how to say this before, but I was watching PBS, and there was this documentary called "Fatal Farming." Long story short... God, why is this so hard? The thing is... I'm vegan now. Chestnut: A vegan? No. No boss's son of mine is gonna be a stinkin' vegan! Here I am, ready to give my left chestnut to be a Burger Boy, and you're gonna give a spot to this little... leaf-muncher?! It's disgusting! Louis: Whoa, you need to cool down! Chestnut: Oh, I need to cool down! Trent: I'm sorry, boss. You never think it'll be your kid. Eddie: Sorry, just playing catch-up here, but what's a vegan? Emery: It's like a vegetarian, except you don't eat any animal products, not just meat. So no dairy, no eggs... Eddie: Wait, what about candy? Can you still eat candy? Emery: Guys, this doesn't have to be a whole thing. I don't need to eat burgers to be a Burger Boy. It'll still be fun to hang out. Louis: Emery's right. Nothing has to change. I'm sure it'll all be fine. Eddie: Yeah, you're probably right. Trent: It'll be totally fine, like when my sister Tiffany stopped drinking. Louis: Huh. I didn't know you had a sister named Tiffany. Trent: We don't talk about her because she stopped being fun. |
Jenny: Do we have any Gatorade? My new boyfriend's a lot of fun. Jessica: No, and keep it down. Evan's had a tough day, and he's trying to sleep. Jenny: You're giving Evan too much attention. What about the advice you gave blondie? Jessica: Jenny, you eavesdrop too much. One day, it's gonna come back and bite you. Jenny: The last thing that tried to bite me is waiting in the garage. Jessica: Maria is a toddler, Evan is a teenager. It's different. Give him a day. Tomorrow he'll be back to normal. Jenny: I got to get back. And don't come in no matter how much I yell "help." |
Eddie: Is it just me, or is tofu at a burger joint a real bummer? Louis: It's like a cat at a dog show. Disrespectful. |
Evan: Are you gonna be waiting here when I get home? Jessica: I promise. Evan: Which room? Jessica: Uhp, the door's closing. Honey: Jessica, you were right... You make a perfect door-closing sound. Jenny: I can make the perfect ass-kissing sound. Jessica: Evan is more clingy than ever. I thought I raised him to be the perfect machine. But I didn't account for one thing... love. Now he's turned on his creator. Jenny: Like the Terminator. |
Jessica: You're all here because you've been dumped before... Some, I'm assuming, more than others. Chestnut: Guilty! Jessica: But you've all managed to bounce back and become mostly functioning adults. How? Marvin? Marvin: Oh, well, I just rebounded the way my father taught me – Move south and date younger. My high-school sweetheart was a 50-year-old in Maine. Jessica: "Marvin... useless." Never thought these words would come out of my mouth, but, Matthew Chestnut, please speak. Chestnut: Well, uh, let me tell ya... Me and Madam Heartbreak go way, way back. Jessica: I hate you. Chestnut: But every time she does pay me a visit, I just crack open a bottle of whiskey, put on an old Western, and weep until my eyes are as dry as the desert sands. Marvin: Spoken like a man who's never been to the desert. Chestnut: Y'know, it's truly amazing how many tears one man can produce in a single month. Jessica: "Never talk to Chestnut again." |
Evan: Mommy! I forgot how bad the school cafeteria food is. Can you please make me a healthy snack? Please, Mommy? Jessica: Maybe in a bit, but first I have a different, original idea of my own. Call your friends and tell them you're having a sleepover! Evan: But you said sleepovers are just a scam to get free babysitting. Jessica: They are, but I'll make an exception. Evan: You're the best, Mommy! I'll go call people right now. |
Jessica: "Three cups turned into four. Four cups turned into five. She asked for the bathroom code. It was 9-7-2-5-3-1-8-0..." Emery: Mom? Jessica: Damn it, Emery! She was just about to meet Gorbachev in the bathroom! Emery: Have you seen Eddie and Dad? I can't find them anywhere. Jessica: Well, they said something about going to Leroy's Burger Town. Emery: Wait, they went to Leroy's Burger Town without me? Jessica: Are you at Leroy's Burger Town right now? Emery: No. Jessica: Well...? |
Emery: You're sneaking off without me? And you invited Trent? What happened to Huang boys only? Louis: Well, what happened to eating meat? Emery: It hurts the animals! Eddie: Of course it does! It's meat! |
Jessica: Alright, boys, I'm gonna leave now. You sure you're all okay? Evan, you're good? Evan: Yes, Mommy. Now please go. Zack picked "truth." We're in uncharted territory, and it's gonna get weird. Geoff: Well, then? C'mon. Evan: Who would you rather kiss – My mom or Geoff's mom? |
Jessica: I hate to admit it, but your ex had some good advice about distracting Evan with his "wild night." Honey: I don't mean to be rude, but you weren't paying that guy? Jenny: Not with money. Jessica: Oh, it's so nice to finally be able to have some time to myself! Evan was driving me nuts, always following me around with the "Mommy! Mommy! Mommy!" The clinginess was just too much. Evan: Just getting some juice. Hopefully it's not too much. [spilling the juice on the floor] Oops, there I go again. Too much. Jenny: She gets it, Evan! You're just wasting juice! Evan: Well, I guess I'll leave you be, now that you "finally have time for yourself." Jessica: Look, Evan, I don't know what you think you heard, but I wasn't– Jenny: Let's check the tapes. Jessica: You were recording? Jessica: Evan was driving me nuts, always following me around with the "Mommy! Mommy! Mommy!" Jenny: Nobody learned from Watergate. Jessica: Look, Evan, I wasn't– Evan: Don't worry, Mommy. What's a few more cracks in this broken heart of mine? |
Honey: It's not that Marvin isn't satisfying in bed. It's just, I don't have the stamina... |
Emery: I can't believe you picked undercooked meat blood over your own flesh and blood. Louis: Well, I got news for you, kid. I run a steakhouse! That's how we survive! Meat paid for the clothes on your back, meat paid for your bed, meat paid for your commemorative coins! Your life was built on meat! Eddie: Yeah, what's the deal, Emery? You too good for meat now or what? Emery: If you're too good for meat, I guess you're too good for... this alarm clock! And this journal! And this... bowl of... loose batteries. Emery: You know what, Dad? I never judged you for eating and selling meat. I respected you. And all I wanted was some respect in return. |
Evan: I know I'm on your bed, but it's not because I'm clingy. There was just nowhere else to go. Jessica: Evan, I felt awful for hurting you. I didn't know what to do, so I called my mom to talk about it. Evan: Did she go on a rant about how annoying you are? Jessica: Actually, she sent me straight to voicemail. But the fact that I wanted to call her made me realize something... Sometimes a kid just needs their mom. |
Evan: I guess I might have been overdoing it a bit. And also, I started to hear myself, and all that "Mommy" is a bit much. From now on, you can be "Mother." Jessica: Mm, just call me "Mom." It's the easiest thing to scream when you're being kidnapped. |
Emery: Your handwriting is really bad, Eddie. Eddie: Look, you're still upset. We've all been saying things we don't mean... Louis: No, it's bad. You should know which way an "E" faces by now. Eddie: We have computers. Who cares?! |
Chestnut: Heard there was an opening in the Burger Boys and you skipped over me for your little golden boy Trent. So now I'm dating your mother. It's your move, boss. Emery: You employ some odd people, Dad. Jenny: I like the ones with low self-esteem. They do anything. |
