Oscar and Jessica started dating each other at a certain time in college. Sometime after they graduated, the two of them broke up because they began growing apart. Shortly afterwards, Oscar found out that he was gay and started going out with his long-time friend Louis, even though Louis had no idea they were dating, believing they were just friends. It wasn't until he came to visit them in the events of the episode, when Jessica found out he was gay and Louis figured out that Oscar considered their hanging out as dating.

Oscar was later invited to the Huang family's Thanksgiving, or "Huangsgiving" as Louis had dubbed it, since Jessica wanted her mother to favor her and Grandma Chu liked Oscar. Oscar and Grandma Chu got along well during Thanksgiving, where he met Marvin Ellis, who was attempting to assemble a football team. Marvin initially passed on inviting Oscar believing that a gay man couldn't play, only to be impressed by Oscar's football abilities; this led to Marvin constantly praising Oscar and attempting to create a career for him, although Oscar refused.
