"Practicum? We're talking about practicum? Really? I'm in here trying to get an autograph, and we're talking about practicum? Practicum?!"
Eddie Huang

"Practicum?!" is the seventh episode of the sixth season of Fresh Off the Boat. It first aired on November 15, 2019.

Synopsis[]

When Evan starts to behave more like a typical eighth-grader, Jessica worries that his future as doctor-president may be in danger. Meanwhile, Eddie has decided on Allen Iverson as his "hero" subject for an essay, sending Louis on a mission to prove that he's just as worthy of that title.

Plot[]

Louis, Emery, Eddie & Jessica (6x7)

Eddie tries to warm up to Jessica

Eddie prepares breakfast for his mother and wishes her a good morning in Mandarin. Realizing that the unprompted Mandarin means that he wants something from her, Jessica asks him and he replies that he would like to skip a half day of school in order to get an autograph from his new favorite basketball player, Allen Iverson. Jessica refuses, telling him that he was not allowed to leave school early under any circumstances, stating that even if there was a fire at school, he was to stay inside and die with honor.

Louis & Jessica (6x7)

Louis agrees with Jessica

Eddie then asks Louis to chime in, and while Louis states that he should run if there's a fire, he tells Eddie that he is siding with Jessica and is against him skipping school. As Louis leaves the house, Eddie proclaims that Jessica is being unfair; Jessica replies that what is truly unfair is Peter Sampras and Denzel Washington having to wear a shirt and her having to complete an academic practicum, explaining that practicum is her shadowing a teacher at a school for 100 hours.

Evan (S6E7)

Evan wears a puka shell necklace

Emery tells Jessica that 100 hours is a lot for everyone involved. Jessica agrees, but states that one must keep their head down and stay the course if they wish to achieve their goals. She mentions Evan, claiming that he is predictable, reliable, and has never veered from his path, only for Evan to pop up with an 'aloha'. Noticing that Evan is wearing a puka shell necklace, Jessica lets out a scream and he explains that his friend Geoff got him into them.

Emery (S6E7)

Emery deals with Jessica

Wearing his backpack using a single strap, Evan bids them farewell, telling them he has to hurry if he wants a seat at the back of the bus. Jessica claims that this behavior is unlike Evan and asks Emery what is going on at school with Evan, and Emery reminds her that they don't go to the same school anymore. Emery tries to convince Jessica that Evan wearing puka shells is not bad, although Jessica believes that wearing them will lead to shady friends, distractions and bad grades, which would prevent Evan from becoming Doctor-President.

Nice Form

Louis compliments Eddie's form

Eddie is practicing throwing paper balls into his waste basket when Louis enters his room with a gift. Apologizing for not allowing him to skip school but wishing to congratulate Eddie on the hard work he has doing to prep for college, Louis presents with an Allen Iverson jersey he purchased from the bargain bin. Accepting the jersey in gratitude, Eddie tells Louis that he has a plan to cover tuition costs by applying for basketball scholarships, only for Louis to shut him down.

IVERSQN

The fake IVERSQN jersey

Louis informs Eddie that he is unlikely to receive one and that even if he did, it would be on a third-tier Euro league where he would've been accepted as an Asian curiosity. As Eddie replies that he doesn't want that, Louis reminds him that he has a great personality and imagination, and that along with his intelligence, there would be other scholarships for him out there. As he thanks his father for the kind words, Eddie notices that Iverson is spelled "Iversqn" and realizes that the jersey is a fake.

Jessica & Principal Hunter

Jessica blames Principal Hunter

Jessica barges into Hunter's office, blaming him for letting Evan "slip through the cracks." Hunter replies that Evan is a straight-A student who is making new friends, and that the only blemish was when he received detention. Jessica yells at Evan receiving detention, and Hunter attempts to soften the blow by explaining that the whole class received detention. Jessica demands that Hunter follow Evan to every class and report back to her, and Hunter replies that he cannot follow one child all day. As Jessica leaves the room, Hunter remarks to himself that he only has one more year with one more Huang.

Eddie & Louis (S6E7)

Eddie discusses his hero

Eddie tells Louis that he has decided to apply for "The Wesley Snipes Scholarship for Orlando Youth," which requires him to write an essay on his hero. Louis asks who his hero is, and Eddie responds that it was an obvious choice – someone who has really impacted his life, embodies the American dream, who came from nothing, has a tireless work ethic, and amazing hair. Louis, thinking Eddie is referring to him, open his arms for a hug when Eddie reveals that the hero has has chosen is none other than Allen Iverson, to Louis' disappointment.

Evan & Jessica (Practicum?!)

Jessica decides to attend school with Evan

At school, Evan is attempting to pull off a card trick to Geoff and Zack. After managing to somewhat pull one off, Geoff invites Evan to his Bar Mitzvah; Evan replies that he thought only family and close friends could attend, and is touched when Geoff responds that Evan is his friend. Suddenly, Jessica sits next to Evan, revealing that she has decided to take her practicum at his school, therefore allowing her to spend 100 hours with him instead of a random teacher and still receive credit. While Evan tries to find the benefits of having his mother attend school with him, Jessica notices that he is playing cards and berates him for it, further humiliating him in front of his friends when she criticizes him for eating applesauce due to the "bad boom booms" he gets from them.

Marvin & Louis (6x7)

"You want to thank me? Enlist."

Louis and Marvin are enjoying lunch at Louis Huang's Cattleman's Ranch Steakhouse when Eddie enters, telling them that he delivered ten meals in under two hours, and asks to take the afternoon off so that he can work on his hero essay. Louis attempts to suggest that he write about another hero closer to home, although Eddie interprets that by thinking Louis is referring to Marvin, whom he thanks for his military service. As Marvin tells Eddie that the best way to thank him would be to enlist, which he shrugs off, Louis clarifies that he was thinking of someone even closer to home, someone he's known since birth, only for Eddie to think he is referring to Jessica. Informing his father that he already wrote an essay about her for Mother's Day, he announces that he will stick to Allen Iverson and heads back home.

Marvin (6x7)

"Well, then you have time to turn things around. Hey, and if you don't, that's what whiskey is for."

Marvin tells Louis that could tell that Louis wished Eddie saw him as his hero. Louis attempts to brush off the situation by claiming that he was overthinking it, only for Marvin to retort that he was underthinking it. He explains that Nicole used to see him as her hero until one day she stopped, and how she moved out soon after and they were no longer as close as they used to be. Marvin warns Louis that if Eddie no longer views him as his hero by the time he moves out, it would over. Louis reminds Marvin that he only has one year left as Eddie is in junior year, and Marvin replies that one year is enough time to turn things around, but that he could always rely on whiskey if he failed.

Jessica & Evan (6x7)

"Remember, sitting down to pee doesn't make you a lesser boy."

Evan receives a test back from his teacher, Ms. Houston, who refers to him as "Ev" only for Jessica to admonish her for not calling him Evan. Evan attempts to explain that he had chosen the nickname himself only for Jessica to tell him to drop it, citing that presidents don't have nicknames despite Evan mentioning Abe Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt and Jimmy Carter as examples. Evan then informs Ms. Houston that he is reverting back to Evan and asks if he could be used to use the bathroom. As she gives permission, Jessica announces loudly that if Evan sat down to pee it would not make him a lesser boy, humiliating him as his class laughs.

Evan & Emery (6x7)

Evan and Emery discuss Jessica's behavior

Evan then leaves school grounds to use a payphone, calling the high school under the guise of a family emergency. Emery rushes into the office and picks up the phone, only to find out that the 'emergency' is Evan complaining that "Mommy" is ruining school for him. Emery suggests that Evan stop calling her 'Mommy' and that he should ask her to pick a new school for her practicum, but Evan refuses, claiming that he is not a saboteur. Emery then advises that he avoid Jessica since it is a big school and asks Evan not to tell Jessica that they spoke regarding the matter, claiming that's he already too involved.

Louis Huang (S6E7)

"Lou don't clown."

In an attempt to have Eddie view him as his hero, Louis also calls the high school as a family emergency to pull Eddie out of school for the day. Eddie initially is fearful that they are moving suddenly, only for Louis to assuage his fears and reveal that he's taking him to get Allen Iverson's autograph. However, while on the road, Louis feigns a vehicular breakdown so that he can 'fix' the van and further cement his status as a hero in Eddie's eyes. Eddie offers to help him fix the issue, but Louis tells him that he has it handled and asks him to play the cassette in the stereo, which contains nothing but "Holding Out for a Hero" by Bonnie Tyler. While dancing to the song, Louis flings a screwdriver under the van's hood, striking something that causes fumes to emit, much to his horror.

Evan & Jessica (S6E7)

Evan begs his friends to sit with him

At lunch, Jessica sits next to Evan and brings out food from home. Evan tells her that he wanted to buy lunch as it was pizza day in the cafeteria, although Jessica replies that today was the day the food at home expired, and tells him to eat it quickly before it turns bad. Evan attempts to have her switch from following him to his honors classes and instead focus on the classes with the visual learners, although she refuses. Just then, Geoff and Zack walk by and Evan pleads with them to sit with him, though they walk away.

Evan (Harvard Row Team)

Evan imagines his future

Evan then presses the matter with Jessica, notifying her that there is a class where the teacher doesn't even have a lesson plan and that it would be a challenge for her. While she claims it is tempting, she reveals that she already lined up their schedules and submitted her timecard to Hunter, and that if it was up to her, they'd be in school forever. Evan then imagines his future being on the rowing team at Harvard University where his mother is still there, humiliating him in front of his peers. As Jessica walks away to use the microwave, Evan states that he must get rid of her.

Flux Capacitor

"Flux capacitor? That's from Back to the Future. I thought you said you knew what you were doing."

Eddie tells Louis that they're running out of time for the autograph signing, and Louis replies that the van's flux capacitor needs fixing and that it would take him a minute. Eddie then gets out of the van and informs his father that 'flux capacitor' is from Back to the Future, adding that he thought Louis said he knew what he was doing. Louis then admits that he doesn't know what he's doing, and that he pretended the van broke down only to break it for real. Eddie asks him why he would pretend the van broke down, and when Louis replies that it was so that he could 'fix' it and become Eddie's hero, Eddie responds that he would no longer get to meet Allen Iverson due to his antics; as he walks off, he mutters "Some hero you are." which causes Louis to fling a wrench by accident into the engine bay, further damaging the van.

Evan Huang & Jessica Huang

"I was padding your hours to get you out of school faster. I don't want you here!"

Having microwaved her spoon, Jessica heads to Hunter's office to inform him that he owes her a new spoon since his microwave destroyed hers. However, upon entering Hunter's office, Jessica gasps in shock as she finds Evan trifling through the employee timecards and accessing her timecard. Evan attempts to cover his actions by claiming he was checking her math, but she replies that he is the one who needs to be checked, having sneaked into the principal's office to go through confidential files, and asks him if his new friends put him up to it. Evan retorts that she was the one who put him up to it, divulging that he was padding her hours to get her out of school faster and that he didn't want her here, stating that she was ruining his life.

Jessica Huang (Practicum?!)

"You're the one who's getting detention and breaking into offices. This is so unlike you, Evan. Very unpresidential. Well, except for Nixon. But at least he had the good sense to pay other people to do it!"

Jessica responds that he was the one who was getting into detention and sneaking into the principal's office and that the behavior was not only unlike Evan but also unpresidential, with an exception made for Richard Nixon. Evan explains that the reason the whole class got detention was because their teacher, who hailed from Arizona, did not believe in Daylight Savings Time and thus marked them all as 'late.' Dismissing his explanation, she tells him that he is veering off course, wearing puka shells and hanging out with "Geoff with a G" only for Evan to lash out and call her "a jerk with a J," and hands her his puka shell necklace as he storms out.

Eddie & Louis (6

"Sure, A.I. is awesome, but you're more than a hero. You're my dad. I'm always going to need you, and we're never going to grow apart."

Eddie is in his room listening to music on his headphones when Louis enters, informing him that Marvin has agreed to fix the van after he jammed a screwdriver in it. Eddie sarcastically calls Louis a hero and remarks that he "saved the day again," and Louis admits that he freaked out when Eddie chose Allen Iverson as his hero over him and that he didn't want them to grow apart. Eddie then tells Louis that it's ridiculous to think that, stating that Louis has always been there for him, having taught him how to drive, given him his first job, and helped him to deal with his women problems. He adds that Louis has nothing to worry about and that while Allen Iverson is awesome, as his dad, Louis is more than a hero, and that he would always need his father and that they would never grow apart. Louis becomes emotional upon hearing this and Eddie asks if his father would like a hug, and the two share a hug. Louis then tells Eddie that he has an idea and tells him to grab his "Iversqn" jersey.

Emery Huang

"Last night, he held a model U.N. with his Beanie Babies. They executed Oinker for war crimes."

In class, Emery is taking a test when Jessica enters and asks Emery what is wrong with Evan. Mr. Kopelow, Emery's teacher, asks Jessica who she is, and she replies that she is a concerned parent before sitting next to Emery. She claims that Evan is not himself anymore and is ruining his dream of becoming Doctor-President, while Emery disagrees, notifying her that Evan held a model U.N. with his Beanie babies the night before. He tells Jessica that Evan is just getting older and trying new things, and adds that if Jessica wants to help him she should give him space. Just then, Mr. Kopelow announces that time is up and Emery rushes to fill in the remaining answers on his test.

Louis permanently banned from all NBA events

"I have a lifetime ban from all NBA events."

Louis and Eddie head to an arena, where Louis tricks a security guard before sneaking on to a Philadelphia 76ers bus in an attempt to get Allen Iverson to sign Eddie's "Iversqn" jersey. While Iverson refuses to do as it is a fake, he gives his own game worn jersey to Louis and autographs it. While Eddie relishes being given an official signed jersey worn by Iverson himself, Louis is permanently banned from all NBA events as a result and is escorted off the property by the guard he tricked, who tells Eddie that he has a pretty cool dad.

Macarena

Evan dancing to the Macarena

Evan is dancing joylessly to the Macarena at Geoff's Bar Mitzvah, held at the North Orlando Country Club, when Jessica crashes it in order to talk to Evan and give him his space. She tells him that she overreacted, albeit claiming she did so barely, because she began to not recognize him and that he had always told her about the stuff in his life. Evan reveals that he does not tell her about stuff such as the puka necklace because he knew she would hate it as she hates most things, a sentiment Jessica agrees with, and that he would like to try things out on his own.

Tsai Hsai (S6E7)

Jessica decides not to insult Evan's cologne

Jessica agrees and tells him that he needs to find out for himself that things are stupid, causing Evan to mirthlessly state that it is no wonder he does not tell her stuff. He apologizes for calling her a jerk and for altering her timecard, and she replies that she will give him his space and that she no longer cares about the timecard, as Mr. Kopelow had notified her that private school teachers do not require practicum. As Evan congratulates Jessica, she realizes he is wearing cologne, which Evan replies is CK One, a unisex fragrance. Not wanting to insult him, Jessica smiles and states that it is interesting.

A college admission officer puts in Eddie's audition cassette in the player, which contains footage of Eddie trying, and failing, to perform various basketball moves, playing with Jenny, and having her record him give moral support on the bench. He then throws a ball into the net and misses, but edits in a shot of the ball going in.

Quotes[]

Eddie: 早上好,美丽的母亲。 您要早餐吗?[1]
Jessica: Unprompted Mandarin? What do you want? I already told you we are not getting a monkey. We already have to take care of your grandma.
Eddie: Fine, but there's an autograph signing at the mall this week, and it's during school hours.
Jessica: No skipping school. Even if the building's on fire, you wait for the bell and die with honor.
Eddie: But it's my new favorite basketball player... Allen Iverson! A.I.? "The Answer"? The All-Star for the Sixers. Got a crossover so smooth, it'll put a baby in your sister?
Jessica: Connie? Don't bring my sister into this!
Eddie: C'mon, Ma, it's just half a day. This is so unfair!
Jessica: Unfair? Wimbledon requiring Pete Sampras to play wearing a shirt is unfair. Denzel having to act wearing a shirt is unfair. Me having to complete a stupid academic practicum in order to become teacher boss... definitely unfair.
Emery: What's a practicum?
Jessica: I have to spend 100 hours shadowing a teacher at some school in order to finish my degree. Apparently, "practicum" is Latin for "waste Jessica's time."
Jessica: Evan, why do you have sea creatures on your neck?!
Evan: Oh, my puka shells? Geoff got me into them.
Jessica: Geoff? Who's Geoff?
Evan: He's my friend from school. He spells his name G-E-O-F-F. Isn't that cool?
Jessica: G-off?
Emery: You're worried about Evan because of puka shells?
Jessica: Puka shells lead to shady friends, which leads to distraction, which leads to bad grades! Next thing you know, Evan won't be Doctor-President.
Emery: I don't know, Mom. Puka shells are just casual beachwear that also work in the city.
Jessica: Well, you know what else works in the city? Institutional racism.
Eddie: I've been thinking about how to help pay for tuition. Four words – Basketball scholarship.
Louis: ...Okay.
Eddie: I'm gonna put together a reel of all my hoop skills and send it to Georgetown, Duke, Kentucky...
Louis: Oh, son, this is the hard part of being a dad they never show on TV. The truth is, you are unlikely to get a basketball scholarship. You are a clumsy boy with a heart of gold. Maybe if you hustle, you can get a cup of coffee in some third-tier Euro league, but even then, you'll just be a curiosity, an Asian spectacle for the Slavs to jeer at.
Eddie: I don't want that.
Louis: No. No, you don't. But what you do have is a great imagination, intelligence, and personality, and there's plenty of scholarships for that.
Eddie: Dad, I took your advice and found an awesome scholarship.
Louis: Oh! "The Wesley Snipes Scholarship for Orlando Youth." Smart. Channeling some of that Passenger 57 money into a charitable cause. He must have a great tax guy.
Eddie: The scholarship will be enough to buy a dope-ass massage chair for my dorm room. It's gonna be pimp. Anyways, I have to write an essay about my biggest hero.
Louis: Oh. So, uh, who do you have in mind?
Eddie: It was an obvious choice. A man who's really impacted my life.
Louis: I'm listening.
Eddie: Someone who embodies the American dream. He came from nothing, has a tireless work ethic and amazing hair.
Louis: That doesn't just happen. That's that work ethic you mentioned.
Eddie: My hero... Allen Iverson.
Evan: I'm such a bad magician.
Geoff: Hey. That's my card!
Evan: Or am I?
Geoff: Dude, how did you do that?
Evan: A magician never reveals his secrets. That's why they're not in relationships for long.
Eddie: Boo-yah. Dropped off 10 meals in under two hours. The trick is, never put the car in "park."
Louis: How would that even...
Eddie: So, can I take the afternoon off? I want to work on my hero essay.
Louis: Oh. Uh, sure. Uh, are you still writing about Allen Iverson? 'Cause I was just thinking, maybe there's another hero in your life you'd rather write about, someone closer to home?
Eddie: You mean Uncle Marvin? [to Marvin] I do thank you for your service.
Marvin: Oh. You want to thank me? Enlist.
Marvin: Nicole used to think of me as her hero, and then... pfft... Gonzo.
Louis: Was it the... uh...
Marvin: What? The lesbian thing? No, no. That was great. I don't know what happened. You know, I used to fix her car for her. I'd teach her about classic rock.
Louis: I'm a big Pink Zeppelin fan.
Marvin: And then at some point, you know, she just... stopped seeing me as her hero. And then she moved away and... we haven't been as close since.
Louis: Really?
Marvin: Hey, if Eddie leaves the house and you're not his hero, it's over.
Louis: But Eddie only has one year of school left.
Marvin: Well, then you have time to turn things around. Hey, and if you don't, that's what whiskey is for.
Ms. Houston: Great job, Ev.
Jessica: Ev? No, no. His name is Ev-an. Trust me, I named him myself.
Evan: It's a new nickname I'm trying out.
Jessica: Did your new friends put you up to this? Lose it. Presidents don't have nicknames.
Evan: What about Abe Lincoln?
Jessica: Dead.
Evan: Teddy Roosevelt?
Jessica: Dead.
Evan: Jimmy Carter?
Jessica: Ineffective.
Evan: May I please be excused to the bathroom?
Ms. Houston: Yes.
Jessica: Remember, sitting down to pee doesn't make you a lesser boy.
Emery: Everything okay?! They said it was a family emergency.
Evan: It's our mother.
Emery: Oh, God.
Evan: She's ruining 8th grade for me.
Emery: That's the emergency?
Evan: Remember how hard it was for me after skipping a grade? I'm finally starting to fit in, and then Mommy shows up.
Emery: Gentle suggestion? Stop calling her Mommy.
Eddie: The office said to come meet you. What's going on? Is it Grandma's bookie? We gotta move again?
Louis: What? No. I just thought I'd stop by and say hello and, uh... take you to get Allen Iverson's autograph.
Eddie: For real? You're not clowning me?
Louis: Lou don't clown.
"Jessica":You call that rowing?! I call it pathetic! No wonder you're all still virgins!
Eddie: Dad, we're running out of time for the autograph signing.
Louis: Uh, don't worry. It's just the flux capacitor. I'll have it fixed in a minute.
Eddie: Flux capacitor? That's from Back to the Future. I thought you said you knew what you were doing.
Jessica: Evan?! Is that my timecard?
Evan: I was just checking your math. Uh, 10, carry the 1... Oh. Yep, looks good.
Jessica: We both know my math doesn't need to be checked. You need to be checked. Sneaking into Principal Hunter's office? Did your new sketchy friends put you up to this?
Evan: They didn't make me. You did! I was padding your hours to get you out of school faster. I don't want you here!
Jessica: You don't want me here?
Evan: No. You're messing up my life.
Jessica: Me?! You're the one who's getting detention and breaking into offices. This is so unlike you, Evan. Very unpresidential. Well, except for Nixon. But at least he had the good sense to pay other people to do it!
Evan: We all got detention, but we weren't late. Mr. Marsh is a hardliner from Arizona who doesn't believe in Daylight Savings.
Jessica: You're still veering off course. That's why I'm here... To get you back on track. I mean, puka shells, magic tricks, Geoff with a "G"?
Evan: Well, you're a jerk with a "J"!
Louis: I just don't want us to grow apart.
Eddie: This is ridiculous.
Louis: I know. I'm sorry.
Eddie: No, I mean, I can't believe you'd ever think that. You've always been there for me. You taught me how to drive, gave me my first job, helped me with my girl problems... I mean, women problems.
Louis: Good catch.
Eddie: You have nothing to worry about. Sure, A.I. is awesome, but you're more than a hero. You're my dad. I'm always going to need you, and we're never going to grow apart.
Jessica: I don't get it. Evan's not himself anymore. He's ruining his dreams of becoming Doctor-President.
Emery: No, he's not. Last night, he held a model U.N. with his Beanie Babies. They executed Oinker for war crimes.
Louis: Okay, bad news... Allen Iverson wouldn't sign your fake jersey.
Eddie: Agh. Iversqn. That damn "Q."
Louis: Good news... I told him he's your hero, and he signed this instead.
Eddie: This is a real jersey. And it's game-worn. It reeks.
Louis: Like 46 points.
Eddie: Thanks, Dad.
Louis: Oop. Last bad news. I have a lifetime ban from all NBA events.
Evan: I didn't tell you about the necklace because I knew you'd hate it. You hate a lot of stuff.
Jessica: I do.
Evan: I just want to be able to try things on my own.
Jessica: I know. You have to find out for yourself that things are stupid.
Evan: And you wonder why I don't tell you things.
Jessica: Are you wearing cologne?
Evan: CK One. It's a unisex fragrance.
Jessica: Ohhh, that's so... interesting.
