"The Big 1-2" is the seventh episode of the second season of Fresh Off the Boat. It first aired on November 10, 2015.
Synopsis[]
It's Eddie's 12th birthday and instead of celebrating with his family, he plans his own birthday party with his friends at the mall. When confronted about his secret party, Eddie confesses that the Huang family rules are stifling his true persona. So Louis and Jessica agree to loosen the reigns and let him go to a sleepover at Dave's house. Meanwhile, Emery and Evan purposely misbehave to gain attention from their parents.

Trivia[]
- Eddie Huang officially turns twelve in this episode.
- This episode aired and takes place between "Miracle on Dead Street" (Halloween) and "Huangsgiving" (Thanksgiving), meaning that this episode takes place in early-mid November. It is later revealed in the episode that Eddie's date of birth is November 10, 1983, placing the events of this episode on November 10, 1995.
- Jessica tells Louis that she saw a "documentary" about a French boy who got carried away by a balloon, referring to The Red Balloon.
Errors/Inconsistencies[]
- Eddie's date of birth is revealed to be November 10, 1983. However, the real Eddie Huang's birth date is March 1, 1982.
- It is mentioned that Dave lives two houses down from The Huang House. This contradicts the episode "Home Sweet Home-School", where it is shown that Dave lives next door to Eddie, as Eddie was seen looking out the window at Dave's driveway. Jessica was later seen watching the rest of the family play basketball from the window at the end of the episode.
- Another inconsistency occurs again in this episode when Jessica goes to Honey's house, who also lives next door to the Huangs, and is seen looking into Dave's house from her window. If Honey lives next door to them and Louis mentioned that Dave lives three houses down from them, it would be impossible to look into Dave's house from Honey's house.
Quotes[]
Jessica: So no party at all? Eddie: No party. Louis: No cake? No singing? No presents? Eddie: Yes presents; cash only, but I will accept gold. Jessica: Respect. |
Eddie: And then we walked into Foot Locker, and we looked at the new Air Jordans for a while. Brian tried to touch them, but they wouldn't let him. Mm. That was it. Jessica: Sounds pretty "chill." Eddie: 'Twas, 'twas. |
Emery: I'm not so good. Would a good kid do this? Shirt boobs. |
Evan: What's up, Jessica? Jessica: Is Eddie in the kitchen? Evan: [to Emery] It's like we're ghosts. |
Eddie: What's going on? Are you guys getting a divorce? Louis: Your mom and I were talking about what you said, and we're going to lighten up on the rules a little. Eddie: Can I stop wearing underwear? Louis: Great question. Jessica: No. We are not poets. But your father and I talked about it, and the next time there is a sleepover... you can go. Eddie: For real? Jessica: Yes. When the time comes, we can talk about– Eddie: I have an open invite at Dave's! I will go tonight. Jessica: No. I don't trust Dave. His own father doesn't want to sleep there. Why would you? Louis: Jessica. Jessica: Fine. You can sleep over at Dave's. But I'm coming, too. Louis: Jessica. Jessica: Fine. I will just stand outside and look in the window. Louis: Jessica. Jessica: Louis. |
Mrs. Selby: Lights out, boys. Time for bed. Eddie: Okay. Dave: I don't want wanna go to bed! Mrs. Selby: Go to bed, damn it! Dave: I hate you! Mrs. Selby: I hate you back! Dave: I wish you were dead! Mrs. Selby: Oh, put it on your Christmas wish list! Ugh! Eddie: ...That was intense. Dave: Ah, we do that every night. No big deal. |
Emery: Are those Eddie's birthday noodles? But it's not even his birthday anymore. Jessica: What are you doing up so late? It's way past your bedtime. You two are grounded. Emery and Evan: Yay! Jessica: Wait. Where are you going? It took me six hours to make these noodles. Noodles, then bed, then grounded. Eddie: I don't know what I missed more, your noodles or your rules. Jessica: Chew with your mouth closed. Eddie: Noodles, definitely. |
Louis: When did you guys become friends? Mitch: What? Eddie: Well, we were in the service together. Louis: What are you talking about? Mitch: The table service. You know, during the fajita craze? Once a fajita man, always a fajita man. |
