"The Shunning" is the third episode of the first season of Fresh Off the Boat. It first aired on February 10, 2015.
Synopsis[]
When the cul-de-sac plans a block party to celebrate NASCAR, Louis urges the family to use the event to make new friends (and promote Cattleman's Ranch Steakhouse). But Jessica has problems fitting in, especially after she befriends a beautiful trophy wife the roller blade moms don't like. Meanwhile, Eddie schemes to win the respect of the neighborhood kids.
Plot[]
Ever since the Huangs had recently moved down to Orlando so Louis can start up his own resturant, things has been a slow start for some of the family. Louis hasn't been getting that much business around the resturant, and even Jessica was struggling to fit in with the other neighborhood women. However, Emery was doing just fine as he is really popular at his school, along with Evan and Jenny who were just simply hanging out with one another. As for Eddie himself, he was still struggling to find himself some new friends. He was pretty much left to fend for himself and had to find a way to gain some popularity or else he will be stuck eating lunch with the janitor for the rest of the year.
Back at Deidre's home, the ladies were excited about this year's block party, as they will be watching the Daytona 500 and also sing some karaoke too. As they talk about the block party, they also took the time to give each other some home made dishes. While everyone was happy to grab each other's dishes, no one even bother to take Jessica's stinky tofu. As for Louis, when he was arriving home from a rough day at the resturant, he got the chance to meet some neighbors who got back from the Florida Keys. They introduce themselves as Marvin and Honey, to which Louis happily greets them both. But he quickly mistakes Honey to be Marvin's daughter due to how young she looked, and the conversation became awkward from there on. Once he entered the house, he noticed that something was up when he noticed Jessica reading a Stephen King novel. She tells him that she is struggling to make friends or even try to relate with others in the neighborhood and wishes she was still with her friends in D.C. Louis let's her know that when it comes to making friends, it simply takes time. However, their conversation was interrupted when Eddie comes in asking for some new Air Jordans. But without even starting an argument, Eddie pretty much answered all of Jessica's concerns very quickly. However, even though he cannot some new air jordans, he figured out after listening to O.D.B. that what he needed in order to gain some popularity at school was to find a pretty girl. Coincidently, he just so happened to see Honey getting her mail from outside, and he knew he found the one. He even had a nice fantasy on what it would be like when he gets her attention.
Later that night, Jessica and Louis were talking about the block party, and Louis figured it will be a good opportunity to promote Cattleman's. But Jessica dismisses the idea since they won't make any profit by doing so. But Louis explains that it's best to show off a good image towards others so that way they can get good business. But their is another problem that they have on their shoulders; they don't even know what Nascar is! So they decided to go over to the Video rental store to get themselves some DVDs on Nascar. While Louis was struggling to find the right DVD, Jessica was watching Stephen King's Dolores Clairborne on a TV monitor. During the movie, she just so happened to run into Honey who was also watching and repeating the words back at the movie. They laugh and introduce themselves, but during their small talk, Eddie comes in trying to flirt with Honey. And while it didn't go well, Eddie told Emery that's just part of the plan and one day, she will notice him.
The next day, as Louis and Jenny were watching a NASCAR race they borrowed from the video store. Jessica heads over to Honey and Marvin's house to watch some Stephen King movies. As they are happily watching, Jessica started to like Honey more due to her fond of Stephen King movies, and even taking a liking towards her stinky tofu! But their movie night got interrupted when Louis went over to the house to talk to Jessica. He along with Evan informed Jessica that the other neighborhood ladies have a strong grudge against Honey. This is because they believe that she was the reason that lead Marvin to divorce his ex-wife Sarah. Jessica however, doesn't really care about it because she finally found the perfect friend she can be herself around. But Louis told her its best if she stops hanging around her because if the others find out, Cattleman's Ranch will run into the ground. Left with no other choice, she agrees to it.
On the day of the block party, everyone was enjoying themselves. Louis along with Eddie, Evan, and Jenny were trying their best to promote the resturant, but they weren't having much luck. Emery however, got himself some dates for the block party. And as for Jessica, she was trying her best to ignore Honey to the best of her ability, but unfortunately it's making her really miserable. When Deidre and her friends over to Jessica to at first tease her for cutting the cake evenly, she offered her a spot to sing karaoke up on stage. Honey tries to join along, but Deidre refused to offer her a spot. She then makes a joke about Carrie in the hopes Jessica would like it, but she pretended she didn't understand, causing Honey to walk away upset. Eddie tries two attempts to get Honey to give him a hug, but she refused at first because she's filled with lotion. And another time when Eddie throws a bunch of Cattleman's Ranch coupons onto her. Because of all this, Honey was now completely upset since everyone at the party is treating her poorly. Eddie also felt disappointed he couldn't get the hug, especially since Trent and his friends laughed at him from a distance. Emery tells Eddie from the kiddie pool the problem with the situation. He tells him that love is tricky, and the reason he isn't getting the attention he wants is because he's never been in love. But Eddie dismisses it.
Eventually, the karaoke was getting ready to begin, and Jessica was still miserable about how she treated Honey. But after noticing her taking and eating her food, Jessica decided to make things right and sing a special song about their friendship. She then sings "I Would Always Love You" by Whitney Houston, and this greatly touched everyone's hearts, including Honey. Later that day, Honey decided to go back to Eddie and allowed him to give her a hug so that Eddie can finally get his respect from Trent and his friends. And this greatly astonished them, especially when Eddie decided to go down a bit further with a butt touch. And with that moment, Eddie felt really happy that he got what he wanted. But then, he notices a car had pulled up on the block, and out came Nicole. Marvin's daughter but Honey's step-daughter. And that's when he finally found his first crush, and finally understood what Emery meant by Cupid's arrow. But his moment was short-lived when a kid accidently throws a lawn dart at him. And while he may have gotten a cast in return, he managed to finally found the girl he has feelings for. Even though she doesn't like him back. And as for Louis and Jessica. Louis was happy he was able to raise interest at the resturant, and Jessica was happy to finally make her first friend in Orlando.
